Standing Or Laying?
« on: December 25, 2006, 12:02:00 PM »

I know this is not a mod in any form but i'm curios....

Alot of people say it is better to lay the xbox on its side....
But if u stand it up (as long as your careful putting the disc in) doesn't it get a better flow of air??

Which is better?

I find it easier to get the game disk in and out when it is on its side.

Many people (including myself) have found that it gets better airflow and keeps cooler standing up, though i don't think it makes too huge a difference.

How can it get better airflow standing? When standing your covering the vent on one side, and there is only a small gap to let air underneath. Also the CPU heatsync uses a heatpipe, which uses convection to move heat up and away to the top of the heatsync. For heatpipes to work best you need gravity to pull down the liquid to keep the convection going. Also heatsyncs in general work better horizontal then vertical. So I can see why people would think laying on its side is better then standing, but I can't think of one reason for standing to be better. Although if there is a difference its minimal.

But exactly the point, heat rises, and when its vertical theres far more space for it to rise to, rather than being confined between the heatsink and either the DVD drive or the metal sheilding.

No offense but, terrible point.

The heat is sucked out of the duct, not pooling up inside the case. Regardless how much room there is vertically, if heat were pooling there in this extra space then your console would surely die because it would keep heating and keep heating. Nope, that's not how it works and it doesn't make sense from a cooling standpoint.

i have mine horizontal, i'm not 100% it effects the cooling, but since no one mentioned it, i figured i would add that i tend to believe the console is much more likely to get tipped over if its vertical. if you have it inside an entertainment center with wireless controllers or in an environment where your confident that it won't take a suicide dive, then your 360 should work great in either position.

I had my 360 for just over 3 months and had it laying horizontal for most of that time.
I bought one of the vertical cooling stands and have had it standing vertical for just over a week and now the Samung drive sticks and won't open unless you press or wiggle the tray a little bit.
The tray works fine when you lay the console horizontal.
MS is sending a box to ship it back. I am not sure if I want to send it to them and risk getting a refurb unit that has other problems like the 3 red lights.

Just my 2 cents
