Hd Addon
« on: December 15, 2006, 02:00:00 PM »

Ok well I thought once I had a wide screen TV I would be able to watch the full screen without the annoying black bars. I just bought the HD add on yesterday which came with king kong. The menu and all the previews etc. play on the full wide screen. But the movie itself has black bars like im using some sort of 4:3 tv! What is this?! I dont know about other people but this does piss me off a tad.

Its not that bad now. I have had a wide screen TV for a few years now and alot of movies are wider than 16:9 so they need the bars to fit on screen.

Its because the way they where shot in the first place.

Your going to have to get to used it and deal with the reality that 16:9 is not prefection.

Also any good widescreen TV should let you strech the picture to hide the bars.

Yes, the case always says this. They don't say "super ws" but they report the film's AR (aspect ratio) on the back of every case.

Even regular dvd's will 90% of the time have a wider AR than 16:9. The person who says it's dependant on the film it was shot with is correct. After watching many 1,000's of dvd's in the last 5 years on a 16:9 TV, I'm used to it.

Sure I would still prefer 16:9 films, but I'm used to it.

The only gripe I kind of have is how most HD movies on my HD television programming actually are in 16:9. The reason for this is that the HD tv channels will either zoom or stretch the image to fit 16:9 perfectly. I prefer this over the real AR of the film because A) there's no artifacting, and (IMG:style_emoticons/default/cool.gif) you still get like 90-95% of the picture.

Oh well.

For future reference, always check the AR on the back of your movie cases. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
