360 Overheating, Voided Warranty - Options?
« on: November 29, 2006, 07:22:00 AM »

I have a 360 that has been opened and flashed so no hope of a warranty repair. Every time I play GOW it locks up with vertical lines after variable periods of time. I have tried everything from stringing up the PSU to removing/formatting the hd to no avail. I'm thinking of using good quality thermal paste on the heatsinks and replacing the fans for higher airflow, but im unsure as to where to source some in the UK. Can anyone help or have any other suggestions. Strangely it lasts a lot longer if I play in SD rsather than HD though that may be down to the GPU having to do less work. I have only had the red rings once as it just locks up then comes back on again after a reset.

sites like www.overclock.co.uk, or even ebay have everything you will need to upgrade things, whack some terms in google.

Although i do reccomend arctic silver 5, or ceramique, AS5 is easier to apply though.

the fans are 60x20mm

this should help get you started, also if you dont care about looks, putting a peice of card over the GPU, and taping off air holes around the fanduct etc to maximise airflow through the heatsink is a great way to keep things cooler.

you could also add a 50mm fan blowing air through the CPU heatsink

how would you mount the fan in front of the cpu heatsink?

it doesnt damage them, if you take it off they return to normal.

you could use hot glue. i had one held on with electrical tape for a while.

Thats exactly what mine started doing with GOW & COD3 until it eventually died with red rings (0102). You could see mine had been opened & the warranty sticker although intact did show signs of tampering. Flashed ine back to original state, phoned MS got a returns authorisation, sent it back & got a replacement yesterday.

i have seen that theres a code for a console overheating and its code for the CPU not the GPU (i think), thats why you get no warning, before a crash.  when i feel the air coming from the back its a lot hotter on the gpu side than the cpu side at least on my box it is. try sticking a 80mm fan in front of the fan for the GPU to suck more air out then see if it happens again.
