I know this has been posted tons of times in tons of different ways but i am unsure if i need a new drive or if i need to use a "rubberband trick" or whatever

I have a flashed hitachi drive that has been working for about 3 months. A few days ago it would start making grinding noises whenever it tried to read a disc..In some cases it would make the noise for a second and then it would just stop and load, etc. Now it no longer makes grinding noises and it doesn't read anything (originals or backups).

It made the grinding noise for backups AND originals.

Is the laser bad? what was causing the grinding noise?
