Hd-dvd Action
« on: November 25, 2006, 10:07:00 AM »

Ok, so I searched every BEST BUY for a flippin drive the day they came out, and nada. So, I said eff it and ordered from Amazon Prime, for a 2 day (free shipping) arrival. It got here (finally). I NETFLIXd (new verb) some HD movies, so I can enjoy more than just King Schlong. - (oh, on a pissy note, I did not win a core 360 for 100 bones on Turkey Day...Damn all of you who did get one! =)

Anyhow, Everything is sweet. Extra content on the DVDs is awesome. Only thing that bugs me, which is way lame...If you power off (with the main button, at least) with the HD-DVD tray open, it stays open...LAME!!!  I mean, how many players do this?...try none. Its not like it doesnt lose power when the USB port goes dead. It has its  own power. I doubt if a software patch could fix that anyhow...maybe a firmware patch.  I have had 2 software updates for the HD-DVD Drive. One right when I installed it, and another when I put the King Kong movie in.

I mean, my computer will leave a drive tray open when I power off, but none of my movie players. I think they should have figured that out in testing...cause I aint gonna ram it back in under no power...so then I have to power back on just to close the damn drawer. I better come up with a new method...

I do like the fact that it adds a USB port instead of losing one. U know I havent tried launching a 360 game or a regular DVD from the HD-Drive...My wife is in the middle of King Kong, and I won't/can't mess yet...

Overall I am still way happy with it so far... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/pop.gif)

Welp, ok that sucks. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) Even if I power off with my remote (Logitech Harmony 360) they tray stays wide open. You can play regular DVDs though. No games though. Sorry dudes.

I wonder if someone could make an app that would use a dvd interface, like a web-browser or whatever. I mean maybe a chaep choose your own adventure style game, or somthing like dragons lair...when you press the remote in a direction. That would rule in HD...even a decent SWF game somehow ported to a DVD would look awesome. I am a total NOOB, so if that is not even possible then, oh well.  All I know is Dragons Lair is sweet.

Please check and see if you can run a regular 360 game on the HD drive.  The DVD drive on my junkbox doesn't seem to work properly and I'd much sooner pay $200 for HD drive than spend $120 for a halfass fixit job from MS if you can in fact run games from it.

This is very encouraging. I would like for it to be able to play games too, but it being able to play DVDs is actually a big thing for me. I like to play games in the evening, and then watch a dvd before crashing out, this will mean i don't have to keep switching between the two.

I know it seems like a small "problem" to be fixed, and it is. But it's just an added bonus on top of the HDDVDness of it all.

MS said it wouldn't, I’m presuming because of its compatibility with Windows, MS wouldn't purposely make it easier for us to get around their security...
