I Just Got A Hitachi Drive Xbox...
« on: November 25, 2006, 01:29:00 AM »

I jsut got my first 360 today and it turns out to be a Hitachi drive. Should i return it and try another store for another xbox or just stick with it. Is the Samsung that much superior?

Well its really up 2 u, a lot of people like sammys because they accept more media. Hitachi works just as fine once you find the right media and burner combo. My hitachi loves my Nec Optiarc + Verbatims, while others say there's won't work with a Nec burner at all so.. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)
It just boils down 2 user preference, if you go sammy, your gonna have 2 find a compatible sata chipset, if u stick wit Hitachi you can flash via USB, both have firmware stealth while sammy had media stealth I'm unsure about hitachi.
You could always just sell/trade the hitachi + key in BST for a sammy + key

I don't have any links handy because I'm on my phone but there's a dvd +  burner + media compatibility thread in the DL burning sub forum.

As far as the best media, I would say verbatim, not because I'm a verbatim fanboy, I actually prefer ritek or benq when it comes 2 dvd+r, but testing with my Hitachi leads me 2 believe that my drive hates riteks and there dyes but loves verbatim.

Also make sure your dvd burner allows changing your booktype. Your gonna need 2 set it to dvd+rom, it improves the chances of your games booting

i have a hitachi 59dj and many of my pals have sammys i prefer the hitachi as its easy to upgrade but thats just a preferance sammys arnt hard its just a diffrent practice.

the major thing you would need to worry about is the model of hitachi you have as the 0078fk is unflashable at preseant saying this there is news of a chip to overcome this that is compatible with all makes and models of drives sammy and hitachis alike.
this though isnt released for a couple of weeks so its a choice youll need to make.
the way to see the liklyness of you owning a 0078 drive is to look at the manufacturers date on the back anything before augest of this year and your fine anything on or after and odds are you have a 0078 drive.

let us know how oyu get on.

I'm not sold on the fact that the hitachi's are less forgiving of your media/burner combo. Since there weren't any deals on verbs right now, i decided to go for some cheap fujifilms and they work perfectly with my benq 1640. I was shocked! After everything i've read about possibly needing a pioneer 111d and verbatims, i wasn't holding my breath.

I was lucky to wind up with a 59dj considering i bought it last week.

I have a benq1640 too. It has worked with a lot of games. I find philips (brand name lazer)
dl always boot first go, whereas some verbies take 5 or 6 goes.

I would rather a sammy as they seem to have more support.

I have a hitachi 47d, it has been pretty good. But for 2 weeks wouldn't play all my backups and know will. Bizarre.
