"please Insert An Xbox 360 Game" - Help Fix
« on: November 16, 2006, 12:21:00 PM »

My 360 seems to have problems with certain games.  With NHL2007 it either tells me to "please insert an xbox 360 disc" or on the occasion it works it sometimes crashes (usually it seems during some sort of loading sequence).  Additionally I recently bought gears of war which it can't even read, it never gets out of the dashboard and just sits their saying "reading".  Any other games, at least that I own, it continues to play fine.  Furthermore, it seems to make a heck of a lot of noise when it's running a disc.

Anyone know a fix for this (I read about a heatgun fix but I'm not sure if my problem qualifies as this), or am I stuck shelling out 140 more dollar to M$, which I refuse to do, or be resigned to accepting my $400 paperweight/zuma machine?

I've had almost the same problem. I was able to get gears of war working for a couple of days by deleting stuff off my harddrive. I deleted some demoes. I did have a couple of games that always worked. I had to end up sending mine in to have it repaired. I am convinced that it is related to the fall update (Oct 31st) so I told xbox support that and they said that they would fix it if I shipped it to them. Well, they recieved it today (shipped out UPS monday).
Anyway, mine was out of warranty too but they should fix it because it was related to the update and they are fixing it for free. Probably could of argued for the shipping costs but it really isn't that big of a deal to me and I don't want to have wait on the box to get here.
The only thing that I didn't try was formatting the harddrive but the update is flashed (I think) to console itself so I don't think that would of helped. I didn't think of it until after I sent it out. I think it is totally a software issue.
Let me know if you get yours working.

What exactly did you tell them to convince them to fix it for free?  I argued with them for a very long time and they only said they would discount it and refund if it later extended the recall period (mine was made in february).

Thanks for the help.

I didn't really argue with them. I corresponded my problems with the update. Which is exactly the case. I started having problems right after the update. Also, I didn't talk to a front line person who I knew won't be able to help me with anything. I wanted a supervisor so I had to wait. I let the manager guy talk me through some troubleshooting stuff that didn't work.
I waited a couple of days before I called them because I went camping but it worked out well cause I was pissed when my xbox first started acting up.
Basically, talk to a supervisor and get them to admit that the update is causing problems and the problems that you are having have something to do with the update. So I would try calm logic and if you are lucky you'll find someone who is willing to listen. Also be prepared with all your information and specifics on what exactly works and doesn't.

Im having the same problems, I got a replacement unit from Microsoft and it never worked at all.  The whole white screen that tells me to put in a game or the constant reading disk.  I even had my girlfriend bring over her system and its doing the same stuff, although hers will play after about 10 times of shutting it off and turning it back on.  So thats two systems exact same issues that I have in my house right now.  I am so glad I payed over 700 dollars for all my xbox crap.  What a deal!

Just curious...
Are you using the same power brick for both consoles that are acting up? Just wondering if your power supply is causing your systems to act erratic. Bad grounds can do all sorts of things to electronics.

You must be lucky.  The supervisor I got barely spoke English.  In the end all she could give me was 25% off, yippie.  So I can pay 100 dollars to get it fixed and then have it break in another couple months and do it all over.  She insisted that they never authorized free repairs on systems after warranty.  She was a total you know what.  The first person I got was more helpful, he even acknowledged that the problem was very common but he wasn't able to help me himself as far as a free repair.
