i got that message today, and I'm using and original disk, on an unmodded system.  can't believe how crappy this console is turning out to be, I'm on my 5th console already.  Wanna hear a funnier story? I was able to convince one of my work buddies to get a 360 with live - cause i love halo 2 soo much, long story short, he did go out and buy one, only to have it 3 ring of death on him 2 days later, I'm soo ashamed.  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/huh.gif)

I've had the same problem, in six days i'm on my third brand new 360, the first one had a cd drive door problem, it was jamming all the time. then the second one was only running for half an hour then it crashed. when i restarted it it just keeps reading disk but wont play it, then it says disk is dirty , needs cleaning.( Brand new out of box) LOL. microsoft shit, no wonder bill gates is the richest man in the world, ripping us all off with his shit products

sounds to me like these 360's are turning out more and more like the ps2 and there p!$$ poor laser's
they started all that pot twaeking with them.
The only redeemable feature about the ps2 was it had a calibration wheel type thing at the back of the drive to give you a little leaway before trying tweaks and eventually buying a new laser

actually that is the biggest misconception and i have to deal with so many customers ps2's because of it..that white gear is to adjust the tilt on a laser on one axis... there is a screw on the laser touching the left slider bar that adjusts the other tilt axis... g4 was completely wrong to tell people to adjust that gear.. if you adjust it too much it will scratch the living piss out of your cd... with that said if you have even a hair line scratch that follows the path of the laser around the disc and no from the center out you can get a disc read error on your xbox 360... if that is the case take the disc in to a shop that has a $2000+ machine that will fix them... do not use a dick doktor i mean disk doktor... disk doktors are pieces of complete crap and destroy the discs more than help them.. a professional machine will make the disc look brand new... with that said i havent had to tweak a laser for a 360 yet so i would say they have not gone the way of ps2..and as far as games like gears of war..my buddies 360 kept freezing til he went on live and updated now no freezing on gow or dead or alive 4..finally i got him to believe me that updates will fix the freezing problem... now they still need to release an update on rainbow six vegas to fix the freezing problem on that one.. and it is not a problem on every system.. ive only  seen the problem with people who do not have a live gold and have a premium system.. never seen a core system with that problem..

fair play to you mate you know a little more than me lol! but my point was that the ps2 laser was extremly unreliable they were like chees in my opinion and more and more evident is the problems with the 360 laser
fine for 5 days and then "unplayable disc" i think the gentlemen said its not a good sighn.

as for the ps2 i was allways told to use the gear as a last resort and never turn it more than 3 clicks in either direction so i didnt and lo and behold whenever someone came to me with a ps2 that displayed disc read errors and wouldnt boot the games between one and three clicks depending on the machine and zip it was away and booted the games perfectly.
saying that they were allways told that it was only temporary and that eventually a month or maybe 3 down the line with extended use your laser will fail and need a replacement.
never had it scratch discs before
