Well the problem is is that the HD DVD doesn't read games and possibly not standard def DVDs or music CDs so replacing the drive with a HD one will just make your 360 a HD DVD player. No games.

Not only that it probably won't boot properly without the standard DVD drive because it runs a series of tests for things like the hard drive and DVD drive etc...

You couldn't fit both into a case without exapnding it somewhat.

Let's think about this for just a second. The HD-Dvd drive is hooked up via usb. I can also be connected to a PC. Does it make sense that it could read originals? Nope it sure doesn't. This would make copying games pretty easy if it could. Basically you'd be giving up your 360's ability to play games to simply watch hd-dvd movies. Good call.

In short yes it would work. You could hook it up and if it would fit in the case properly then it would work. You would have a loud and hot movie playing machine.

Another thing to consider would be the speed of the drive (something that I'm not sure of).

The 360's drive is a 12 speed DVD drive and if the HD-DVD drive is less than that, then you would not have a standard across the board. Which is probably the main reason M$ just can't make a 360 with a built in HD-DVD player. At least not until faster drives are available.

And then there's the fact that the HD-DVD drive is a bit bigger.
