360 Problem, Lots Of Questions
« on: November 10, 2006, 08:33:00 PM »

I bought my 360 slightly under 2 months ago.

Yesterday, it froze on me during the startup screen.
I reset it and got 3 red lights, after leaving it sit, I could bring it back up but would freeze very quickly.

It will randomly freeze during the startup screen, on the dash, in game, anywhere pretty much.
The red lights seem far less common than the freezing screen, it will give me red lights from time to time but usually freeze during startup instead if its been on.

This overcourse sounded like an overheating problem to me, but it sits alone on top of a desk in a very well ventilated room with AC, as does the power supply.

After thinking about it, the night before my roomate and I did play for a couple hours straight on Gears.
I've read the forums on fallupdate and/or gears of war caused similar problems for other people but has any of that been proven? Could too much GoW burnt something up? Fallupdate causing a problem? Just faulty 360?

Also, if you could advise; I have over a month left on the M$ 90-day warranty but the sticker is fucked due to modded FW. Do you think any excuse could get me around the sticker problem? maybe damaged it changing faceplate, remove the sticker and all remnants completely and firmly stand by it simply didnt have one, etc? Do they DEFINATELY check this? If I do send it back to m$ and they see the damaged/missing sticker, are they going to hold my box random for shipping or something, make me pay, then just give it back? I have heard you can pay $130 to have it fixed if out of warranty but i cant do that.

Lastly, I still have my doubts about it being overheating because its happening so fast; from ice cold, off all day, I turned it on and barely loaded into the first level of a game before freezing. Should I put on some arctic 5? do the hot air gun thing? buy those nycko fans for the exterior? replace my interior fans (if so, what are some good ones, i dont care about LEDs just cheap and definately something that will help move a ton of air, quiet if possible)?

If you actually read all that and can help with some of my problems, THANK YOU!

I don't have too much info on exactly what your problem is, but I found this artical on reghardware that reminded me of your problem.

http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2006/11/09/xbox_update_blunder/

I haven't seen anything else on this site about this yet.

"Microsoft's Autumn Xbox 360 update is causing consoles to freeze at random intervals during play. The snafu apparently affects all games. "

Hope this helps you

I am also having the same problems with my 360 freezing up and sometime's displaying the 3 lights of death since the last update. I also know that mine is not do to overheating because sometime it will do it the first time i turn it on for the day. So i believe that the newest update is freakin something out... hopefully microsoft or someone will notice soon before more 360'a get fried

WTF!?  so the update gave people E71 and then M$ updated to fix that. and now people are getting red lights and freezing!?  I havnt had to update yet becuase I dont have L!ve and none of the games I play, including GoW has prompted me to update.  I will be getting CoD3 and TonyHawk soon, hopefully those dont have this shitty update that fucks with the system.

Small Update

Earlier today i had completely taken the case off in preparation for flashing the drive and decided to try and play it first, I played for a good 20-30 minutes or so and assumed it was working fine; I powered off the xbox plugged the hard drive in to load my profile and tried to play again for further testing but it froze within the first minute.

My DVD drive is a Hitachi, I updated my FW from 2.1 to 2.3 w/ stealth hoping that would fix something, seems to make it freeze much faster, of course it had been on for awhile at that point.

I also checked the error code once it finally stopped just freezing and gave me the 3 red lights. its 0110.
If anyone else is expiriencing this, please check the error code and post it here.
I've seen this labeled as unknown and overheating memory.

Still been too scared to send it to m$, last thing I want is for them to decide since the sticker is damaged I'm going to have to repay them for the shipping and pay shipping home and they dont even touch it.
Anyone with an opened xbox have any information about their dealings with m$?

I'm going to keep trying to fix this, then restore the original fw and keep trying that, and as a last resort I spose send it back.

I've had a similar issue.  The fall update seemed to go over well, I played a few games the day after without problems.  A few days later Splinter Cell downloaded an updated and rebooted.  When Splinter Cell resumed, the intro and title screen skipped and eventually froze.  Upon a reboot, the white bootup screen froze.  I powered off, then on and I got to the dashboard and then loaded Splinter Cell again, only to have it freeze.  On the next bootup I got an Error 79.  Powered off, then on and I get three red lights with error code 0102.  After four days of tinkering with the box I gave up and purchased a new one at Target.  Guess I'm going to be selling my old one for parts.   (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

sounds like your xbox is just broke. i too have 3 red lights, and i'm pretty sure it is a bad solder point under either the gpu or ram.  the "hot air gun trick" will temporarily fix it. my problem seems to arise again when i play for about an hour or less then turn the 360 off. over the last couple months i've probably heat gun'd my 360 4 times. i'm getting tired of doing it (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) i don't know how much it costs to get the board x-rayed to check the solder points under the chips but now i'm at the point where it isn't about cost, i want to know why my 360 fails constantly and a hot air gun fixes it temporarily. i'm going to eventually buy a new console just because i'm tired of fixing this one but the one i have is a part of me and i shall figure out the exact problem because it is driving me crazy (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

at one point i did ship my console off to ms after opening it and it is a waste of time. they just send it back saying they won't fix it and won't support it even if you pay. they don't charge you for shipping.

After calling m$ and argueing for atleast 15 minutes on the phone, the guy i talked to finally said he would send a box out for free shipping. He kept telling me all they do is fix it free not pay for shipping, I said I know thats not true I've read many accounts of them paying for it, after demanding a supervisor and waiting on hold 5 minutes he came back and said i could get free shipping. If anyone is trying to use their warranty DO NOT pay for anything and demand to talk to someone else.

I doubt I would have sent it in anyway, the previous post mentioned that they'd just send it back.
I decided to do the hot air gun method to repair my xbox, but i did not have a hot air gun at the time so I used a hair dryer. The first attempt I left the motherboard in the case and simply removed the dvd drive and concentrated heat over the gpu and memory areas. After plugging it back up, this did not work so I removed everything from the case and tried again. I noticed the heat transfer mashmellow pads on the bottom of the motherboard were kind of shitty. One was really deformed, like smashed on one side so only one part made contact with the bottom of the case. After trying to reshape them somewhat, i completely removed them. Heated for a good five minutes with the hair dryer full blast almost in contact with the ram concentrated on them, top and bottom. Heat-sync was hot enough to burn my fucking hand afterwards.

After letting it cool, plugging everything up, even putting the case back together I loaded some GoW and suprise it froze again. I immediately turned it off and back on again for some reason and loaded my live arcade. I played a good bit of geometry wars, no problem. Loaded the demo for new rainbow six, played that for an hour, no problem. Loaded GoW, no problem! Maybe starting with little use of the memory had warmed it up enough to play? Maybe the hair dryer or removing those stupid pads worked, mysteriously only after failing 1st attempt to play gears?

I dont know how helpful this is because I'm not exactly sure what fixed it, just thought I'd relay the happenings. Of course, its probably temporary, none the less, its working for now  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
