2 Tries To Turn Xbox On?
« on: October 29, 2006, 12:21:00 PM »

Right, only had my xbox a week but have found an annoying problem.

First time I turn the xbox on I do not get a picture on my LCD TV, I have to turn the xbox on then off again and it will boot up as normal. No lights, no error codes or anything.

Am I doing something wrong or is this a common fault? Do I have a faulty xbox? I am using a Dell W2600 LCD screen.

Let me ask you this..When you are not getting any video on the screen, if you look close at it.. Do you see anything? Like a pattern of faint white dots moving?

This is odd because I thought mine might be the only one that does this.  Usually almost guaranteed it will not show a picture on the first boot.  I turn it off and then on again and it boots up fine with no problems and will run fine for hours.  It seems to only do this when I turn it on for the first time every day.  Now I know my unit is a refurbished unit.  I got it warrantied from M$.  Since I still have warranty till August '07 then I'll just wait till it gets worse before sending it back.  It's just a minor inconvenience.  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/happy.gif)

Mine did this from day one, right out of the box (May manf date). It was annoying but I lived with it as the console otherwise worked fine. Then, after a month, my 360 would freeze on occasion. Not a lot, just once here and there. After another month of this occasional freezing, it started freezing on boot-up 90% of the time. I don't know if the two problems were related, but of course I sent it in for repairs.

Three weeks later, a replacement system (Sept manf date) arrived at my door. Set it up, hit power... and nothing. Same problem. Immediately call MS to vent, got routed to a supervisor. I explained the problem and my concerns about it possibly evolving into the freezing issue again and was flat out told: "send it in again... it will only get worse." So I did.

If you've still got your warranty, I highly suggest you send it in for repairs. If not, I hope she was wrong and they are not related.

On a side note, just to finish the story... the third console I received after the above repair call did boot fine on first power on... whew! Unfortunately, I received it during the short time that the Fall Update still had the E71 glitch in it and didn't know about it. Well, you can guess the rest of the story... BACK TO MICROSOFT FOR THE THIRD TIME!

Still waiting for it to come back...

Sometimes this problem is with the LCD itself.  I had a screen that didn't always recognize the "screen on" signal from VGA the first time.  It would take two or three tries to get it to turn on, with ANY system.  It just wouldn't come out of standby.  I ended up having to turn it off with the button, and then turn it on and immediately turn my computer/360 on.

Of course, it's RARELY the LCD.

I have this problem too, always two times to boot.  And surprisingly (or not) its a May '06 Manufacture date.  Hmmmm....  I've been playing for months and it has never gotten worse.  About every 20 boots, I get E74, but it always turns on and plays for hours with no problems.  Tech support made me read my screen several times as they were dumbfounded that I had "E74".  The woman told me that "they don't get those any more".  Another tech person (all from the US) told me it was an HD problem.  I have mine connected through my Yamaha Reciever and into a Sony Wega 36" HD-Ready TV.  All via component cables.  I've tried a different cable set to no avail.

In any event, if nobody ever finds a fix for this, I'll just keep using it until it dies.  When it does, I'll either send it in for repair or just find a deal on a core system.

I wonder if there are any solder problems on the A/V encoder.  Almost like it takes one boot to warm up enough to complete the connection.  If these are all May dates, then there could have been a factory hiccup and there are several hundred (or thousand) out there with this problem.

I have the exact same problem. First time I turn it on, it won't boot up. Otherwise, everything is working fine. I am hesitant to send it to MS because I only had this console for a week and I don't want to receive a refurb/used system with potentially more problems.

This is exactly what happens with mine.

And this is the same solution I did.  I'm going to use my premium system until it breaks down, already have my core modded and ready to go.  Cost me $200 for a brand new core.  I'm wondering if it has anything to do with the signal, but I doubt it.  I may plug it back into my TV to double check.

Hopefully someone finds a solution.  I tried taking the entire thing apart but stopped when the heat syncs weren't coming off (shows me that the thermal compound is properly done).  Other than that, the board is completely clean and everything looks pretty much the same as in my new system.
