360 Lan Party Woes
« on: October 01, 2006, 10:04:00 AM »

Finally, after months of not doing it, we finally got together at my brothers house to kick off Vegethon 5. Basically an annual thing we try to do, where we cram as much junk food, gamin, and caffeine into a 7+ hour geek session. Honestly, things used to be much more simple with the orignal XBOX.

I never even considered the pain in the rearness of having 15 wireless +1 wired controller(s) in close proximity. Bascially the idea was to have 4 boxes, 2 in the living room, 2 in the family room. One on a DLP projector, one on a 32 inch LCD (very nice btw), one on a 51" Samsund DLP, and one on a 21" Pc monitor. So after screwing around with the Dobly Digital Optical cable for 10 minutes without sound, we finally realized that you can only extend those thing so far without the use of an amp (which my brother had thankfully). Good sound, good video, 99 nights looks damn smooth - great...

So I had brought my 2 xbox wireless adapters down in order to create a sweet hazardless and "trip-free" playing area. Gotta have a clear path to the Papa Johns, cooler, red vines, doritos, mass of halloween candy, and countless other calorie loaded wonders. One of my "adapters" is a hacked Linksys WRT-54G, so technically it is a bridge. Well, I had no idea what the hell the Ip address of it was. My other official XBOX Wireless Adapter (old version) is held together with duct tape. I snapped the antennae when I had it behind my tv, and I shoved it against the wall *snap* . It will be up on E-Bay in the next couple weeks (Yates2k) - repaired of course. Still works flawlessly. I am gonna package it with XBGM disc 01- which I actualy don't know of too many people who have that. Anyhow - instead of screwing around with the already running short power outlets, I decided on using the lame hard-wired network hub.

You would have no idea how long it actually takes to set up all of this BS, especially when WOW nerdling #1 thinks the projector with surround sound (now cranked) are now his own personal gaming arena with a lifetime supply of snacks, and is not helping whatsoever with setup. Note to Self- remember to buttstroke said Wow Nerdling many many times on the back of his dome later.

Welp, believe it or not, those little sync buttons on your controller and on the face of the 360 are quite handy. So im in the living room, trying to setup 4 profiles on each box (also unforseen lameness), and trying to get 4 controllers to connect. Well in my mind if i am close (2 feet) to the 360, that should be the one it connects to, right? WRONG! So, Fter I hit the connect button, then I have to go an a freaking easter egg hunt to see which fliipin xbox I just sync'd up with. So I got smart, and powered OFF that one troublesome box (happened to be mine) in the living room that wanted to keep adding controllers. Ha ha, add one now whore!..sure enough (genius me) I just managed to power it right back up and add a controller. Ok that power cord got yanked right out.

Basically, I finally figured out, to add a controller to a 360, just have the 360 on, hold the silver controller button for a sec (to turn it on) then press the controllers sync button, followed by the desired 360 consoles button. They both do the little ring of light swirl for several seconds, but then pretty regularly, they sync/connect correctly.

Ok, so now I have enough flippin controllers, anyone down for some COD2 ?? We got 4 copises, most have played it...sweet!...WRONG!!!. System link on Call of Duty only allows stinking ONE PERSON PER CONSOLE. Muther Eff. Bill, seriously, that is just GAY! So Call of Duty is out.

So we toss in some GRAW. Ok, everyone manages to figure out the add a profile thing (Halo on the original box was soo simple - why mess up a good thing?), and get into the pre-game menu. Well first round we kicked off was 20 minutes, free for all. Well, somehow, I managed to join as a spectator, which u cannot change (that I know of) for the entire round. Good time for me to introduce myself to the plethora of snacks: red vine and moutain dew powers  UNITE!! Please give me the unparralleled steadiness so I can smoothly wield my wireless weapon with nearly god-like accuracy.

So, everyone who had never played GRAW (most of em) decied to try Halo 2. yeah yeah, I know its old school (now), but the graphcs are damn good on these new HD screens. Everyone is pretty familiar with all of the gameply and weaponsets, and objectives, like how to get meleed with the flag by me. Well all of us geniuses except my brotherwho was hosting the party managed to forget our Old Xbox crap. no halo 2 for now. we finally decided on Perfekt Dark Zero. This is actually a pretty fun sys link game. I have played the sinlge and co-op missions (some of them), and those are great, but the multiplayer is pretty fun. A lot of those weapons have some pretty smooth terciary modes. Dual revolvers is nice.

So basically it took an hour forty five to get everything setup, rolling and finally to the fun stage. I do really have a greater appreciation for the simpleness of XBOX LIVE. It is like a lan party in your pants - so to speak. and it doesnt take an hour 45  to figure out...

Feel free to give me advice, or to comment. Oh, I just emerged from my semi-after-Lan-party-comatose state  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) , so if this makes no sense...I apologize...later!

That was an awesome post. I laughed, because I've done the same thing with the controllers. Heres the deal with that. if the 360 your controller is originally synced up with is within range powering on the controller will only power up the synced console. You did the right thing by taking out the cord since that seems to be the only way to keep it from coming on. All in all it sounds like a blast, I love lan parties.

P.S. It sounds like you are still riding your lan high, hahah I could picture you typing this thing and just randomly shaking violently from sugar withdrawal, but like I said awesome story.
