Xbox 360 CPU to Swith to 65nm Next Year

Murmurs from the more technical corners of the internet suggest Microsoft's about to switch to new processors for the Xbox 360, running cooler to make the machine much more reliable.
The new chips will use a 65nm process to run more efficiently than the console's current 90nm chips.

According to the tech-heads at VNUnet, Microsoft will make the change in the first few months of next year, instantly reducing the temperature inside the Xbox and cutting down the amount of overheating issues experienced by gamers.
Chartered Semiconductor will be responsible for the new chips, and although they're not as advanced as 40nm models in the pipeline from Intel and AMD, they'll still make a big difference.

This is a great sign.  I wonder what temps I would get if I were to water cool a 65nm CPU?!

Most likely they were not available prelaunch.  They might have been but I cant see them being anything more then then beta stages prelaunch.

die shrinks happen all the time and they happen when process effciency and and process technology allow them to.  Actually the new 65nm dies will make thing more proftiable as that increases yeilds per wafer, ie. more chips per silicon wafer.

Of course the other option is that the profit margin may be maintained at the current levels with a price drop.
A price drop at the begining of next year would be handy for MS as it would increase the pressure on a certain Sony product.

My extended warranty 360 might have issues soon after the 65nm 360s come out. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) well worth the $25 extra bucks from eb, and then I'll extend my warranty again, just incase its buggy, but in all honesty, my warrantied  360 is dead and I'm waiting till the 65nm 360's come out to trade it in. I just hope they come before april 07 (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

whoa whoa, the ones with the new cpu are going to be in different color cases?? if this is true then 2 things i wanted will have come true. i've wanted a black 360 and the next 360 i was going to buy wouldn't be until they revised the cpu.  wow, this could be good. that is also true and something that they will most likely take advantage of as well.

lol here is an article I sent my brother on April 23:
"Microsoft to upgrade Xbox 360 CPU:  New CPU technology can reduce temperature and lower cost"

Actually XS has known about this rumor for months, its just now official (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

In fact Xs had an article on it in feb of 2004 article about 8 topics down but then it was still known as xbox 2 (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) Xantium never gets left in the dark.

Yeah because an entire board redesign would definitely be easy and inexpensive. Not to mention that the software would just automatically take advantage of a second cpu. Someone needs to make you the CEO of something.... does the special olympics have a CEO?
