How Do You Go About Changing The Dvd Drive?
« on: September 11, 2006, 10:53:00 AM »

I have a hitachi drive from release day at the moment and it is having problems reading discs now. It is also very loud compared to other X360s.
Now with the xbox is was as simple as just plugging it in, as I understand it, that can't be done with the x360.

If I wanted to change my DVD drive in my x360 what would I need to do, bearing in mind I have NO interest in backing up my games.

Thanks.

Just unplug the old and replace with the new, simple!  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

you would need to get the dvd drive key from your old drives firmware then inject it into the new drives firmware

...and you are running a fourm site about the 360 and you don't even know that you have to switch the dvd key between drives and that each dvd drive is locked to each motherboard with a unique key?

...as for doing it, you can either read up about flashing the hitachi drives and basically read the firmware from your dying drive, extract your key and save it...then you extract the firmware from you new drive, patch your old key into the new firmware, then flash the new firmware to your new drive...the hitachi's are a bit more of a pain to get recongized as you have to do a 'two wire' trick which has caused lots of people to brick their hitachi drives...i use a connectivity kit which allows you to switch the hitachi drive into a mode that allows the pc to recongize it easily..they cost around $20-30, but I find them an awesome tool for flashing drives and it has more than paid for itself already...you should start by reading the tutorials in the firmware forum section to get an idea of whats involved and see if you're comfortable doing it...i'm sure their is a lot of people on here that would do it for you for a small fee, depending on where you live...

Ignorant reply.

You can go here  to read up:
http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?sho...=531333&st=

There's also a tool called 360 Toolbox but I don't know the complete process so you can read on that as well.

Although you have no interest in backing up games, you still have to retrieve the key from the old drive(by backing up the FW first) and flash the new drive with the correct FW(dependent of what DVD drive you have) containing the correct key(that you get from the old drive's FW).
