agreed to everyone... that price is way to much for an addon. that price would keep me from being an early adopter of HD-DVD and wait untill the format war is over and cellular coverd orbs are the next generation HD movie medium. to people that don't make over $100,000 a year paying anything over $300 for a peice of equipment that MIGHT be cosidered the next betamax is almost committing finiacial suicide. MICROSOFT, MY KIDS HAVE GOT TO EAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
anyway, i support HD-DVD all the way, and want to see it win, but I will not pay more than $200 for this for it to possibly be a paperweight that looks like the 360 in a year or two when this war is over. even if it does win, I like to have all my entertainment into one package as i have it now... DVD's, games, TV, music, pictures and videos... all on my 360. it's the ONLY thing i have hooked up to my TV. I am willing to sacrifice a little quality for having it all in one package, but when I can add on mearly $100 more, i can have a standalone that would upconvert my current DVD's to HD I would do that. to me, $200 is pushing it. $250 i might get it, but i'll wait a little while. $300+ and you can leave me out. $150 and i'll preorder.
on a side note, I think it would be a good idea for microsoft to take a loss with the HD-DVD addon like they do with the 360. they have the finiancial backing to do it, and it would better boost the possiblility for HD-DVD to win and would help them in the long run, and further boost their console sells I would think... here's what would happen at home....
dad- honny, what do you think about getting one of those new high def movie players?
mom- good idea, i already like hd
dad- well, they cost around $500
kid- dad i want a game system!!!!!!!
dad- well the xbox is $399, and the HD player for it is $199... we might get that.
another thing to think about. with windows vista comming out, i would bet that almost all bought computers will come with vista home prem or vista ultimate except for the buget type pc. well, that will touch every home with media center, and hell, even now you almost can't buy a home pc off dell without windows media center unless you pay more!!! if MS starts pushing their vendors to try and sell the tuner cards and push the possibility with the 360, it will help both places like dell and MS because dell made more money off the tv tuner (or ocur tuner if they come out) and then ms makes more money with windows and xbox.
sorry for the rant.... bottom line. break down for the average tyep of people.
young gamers- most are low buget, or their parents buys it for them, and would like it but thieir parents already shelled out alot on the system.
older gamers, this would also include the tech minded people-knows the war going on, would not spend that kind of money on something that might be a paperweight. average income level of around 30-60k
entertainment enthusiasts-love the idea of HD, already has HDTV, may have bought HD-DVD. they will know the quality difference between the two. they won't sacrifice quality unless the price is right.
