when you can get a standalone player for $429 now, which is surly to drop for christmas sales why would anyone play $300-$370 for an add on drive?

Is M$ pulling a Sony??

Official M$ anouncements said US release will see a xbox360p (399usd) and the hd-dvd addon being less than sony's 600$usd announced price.

That means:  at, around or below 200$usd!!!

If M$ wants to kill the hd-dvd format anything over 200$usd will be the first great step in ensuring a BR win.

So take this report w/ a grain of salt, cuz not only would M$ kill hd-dvd with a +300$usd add-on price point but maybe even the 360 as well.

This is a really disappointing news. I hoped for a price of around 200€. But with that price, i will rather go for a standalone HD-DVD player.

Bo!!ox to that price, I have a dvd player that upscales and plays all the AV formats that u can throw at it and it cost less than £100.

Come on M$ get ur shit together and come back down to the planet that the rest of us live on.

Lol I've been supporting HD-DVD cause you would actually get the choice to pay a bit extra for it instead of being forced to BD with PS3. But that price is insane, it forces you to either get a stand alone version or none at all. Insane move from Microsoft, gonna do my best to help people realize it's just stupid buying the addon instead of adding a bit more for a stand alone or just skip it.

I think that it will be more in the $149.99 to $199.99 range.  That should keep them under sony but still make money.  I mean come on.  Its not the console that costs all the money its the add ons.  Just good business for M$.  This way they have a cheap nexgen console compared to sony's PS3.  The HD-DVD is only good for movies.  Most people got HD-Divx or HD-Xvid.  Plus people got tons of DVD's like I need to go out and buy new HD-DVD movies to replace the DVD's I got.  I'll buy one if I really need to watch something in HD.

Doesn't suprise me at all, was always going to be (around) £200, personally I don't even think its that expensive. Early adopters (ppl going HD this year) getting a 360 and HD player & 2 HD movies (and most proballby a game aswell) for £400 seems to be very competive when you will be paying around £350 for a standalone HD player this year.

If this is true, then either MS is on crack or bluffing. You can buy the Toshiba HD-A1 DVD player (albiet the size of a suitcase) for $399 at some stores.

Since you don't need it for games, why just not buy a HDMI-ready player?  blink.gif

wow this cant be true!

the max price for the ´HD-DVD player should be 249$ if its going to be 370$ then i demand that it should include 10 XXX rated HD movies! pop.gif  wink.gif

so many Sony fanboys are going to be happy if this is the correct price...

and that is maybe some good news cause sony fanboys are going to be disapointed even more when they turn on the PS3 and see how much shit it really is laugh.gif

For US $200, I would buy it without a second thought. $250 would be pushing it. $300 or above? Hell no! I don't need/want movies bundled in (Netflix w00t). Spent hella on the 360 Premium already foos! I am just one guy but I know I am not the only one who feels this way.

QUOTE(twistedsymphony @ Sep 8 2006, 06:59 PM) View Post

wow, I'm honestly shocked it's that high. Didn't they say that the cost of the console+Drive would be less then the cost of a PS3...

I guess I'll be waiting quite a bit longer before buying a next gen video format.

I almost wonder if this has something to do with the recent announcement of the Blue Doide shortages holding back production of next gen drives (and suposidly the reason why the PS3 production was cut way back).

We still have to wait for what a final price for the ps2 will be though, and also the Wii is rumored to be about £150, and MS said you could buy a 360 and Wii for cheaper than the ps3, so it does look like the ps3 will be atleast £400
