Ok this sucks. I finally managed to get me hands on the elusive SH-D162C. Came from Australia via Ebay from the seller pcsmith. Once I get the drive, I try to boot er up but nothing. I take it to a local PC repair shop & they tell me the thing is DOA, maybe a problem with the power but he couldn't be sure because the thing is a brick (i swear i didn't do anything to it).

I know this kinda thing happens but here are the problems: It is new & under warranty but I suspect that if I gave it up to Samsung, I would get a different, though equivalent, drive back. I can send it back to the ebay seller, but with shipping there & back, I might as well get another frickin drive. (Plus, he said he would test it & if it was working, he would charge me AU $35 for his trouble. What if it gets knocked around some more then decides to work?) There is a local place that can fix it but they charge $80 per hour with a $40 minimum. I have googled for repair related stuff but that is like wading through a sea of ^%#^#$. Not really any good options. sad.gif

I have access to a multimeter & soldering iron. Any savvy cats out there know how to troubleshoot & fix one of these bad boys? Any info would be much appreciated.

Found manuals but they cost hella! $25 for the one I want. BAH! Here it is anyways:

They have manuals for all the variations I could find, eg. RSWP, BEBP, etc
Can anyone get these for free?

Many free service manuals to be downloaded, for just about anything, can be found here:

Though they didn't have my manual, someone advertising on their site did.

did he offer any kind of DOA warranty? send the shit back and dont give him the 35 bucks if he demands it... report him for fraud if he wants to play that game. if it was really DOA when you got it you dont deserve to be ripped around.

That's the problem with ordering stuff from the other side of the planet. It comes broken or breaks and it gets ugly. The shipping is worth 2 drives alone. There's only a few stores in North America that carry any of the Samsung optical drives and for good reason. They're not that good. I certainly would not buy one for any other purpose over any of the other drives.

The only solution is if someone can make the Kreon changes to one of the common LG (GDR-8163 or 8164) or Lite-On (SOHD-16P1S or 16P9S) DVD-Rom drives which can be found everywhere.

I have read posts that Kreon in the future wanted to mod a flash from the Samsung burners. We'll be in the same boat once again. Maybe we'll get a break and he'll mod the flash for the Pioneer DVR-111D or 110 instead...

All we can do is hope at this point...
