While putting my Samsung DVD Drive back together I ruined the flat ribbon cable that connects between the drive board and the laser assembly. I got in a hurry and forced in into the laser assembly connector incorrectly. This caused the contacts to seperate and break from the plastic backing.
I was screwed as no replacement cable is available. I started scrounging around and found a cable that works in one of my junk PS2 DVD Drives. The laser cable in it has the same size contacts and spacing, it's just 30 pins wide where the Samsung Xbox 360 DVD Drive cable is 26 pins wide.
I trimmed down the PS2 cable from 30 pins to 26 pins and it works! The PS2 cable is a little shorter than the Xbox cable but does not cause any problems. The PS2 cable is found on PS2 versions 1 ~ 10. These cables are available on Ebay for about $6 to $10 US. Sure beats spending $150 for a replacement drive. (IMG:
