Ring Of Light Does Not Work, Period.
« on: August 21, 2006, 12:11:00 AM »

The other day, I dropped my 360 (I was unloading the car and dropped the bag it was contained in) and now, when I turn the 360 on, no lights whatsoever on the ring of light come on, not even the power indicator. Also, I cannot connect to the console with the wireless controllers. I can however turn it on and use the media remote though.
I even tried to get the ring of light to come on by creating errors....nothing. I tried the 'learn' function or whatever for the wireless controllers and nothing whatsoever on the ring of light will come on. I also checked and made sure that the power was plugged in properly and all the way.

Now, I'm thinking that I just need a new ring of light/RF PCB... however, would that make sense if the RF media remote still works? Or is it possible that only part of the board broke?

Now, I have no problem opening up the 360 and am technically inclined to do so (A+ certified actually). And I can get the ring of light/RF PCB off ebay for $25 and replace it myself. However, if I open it up and break the seal, MS will not even touch it even though it's an out of warranty repair for $130 (actually, more like $180 with shipping from alaska). So I'm worried that what if I open it up and it turns out that it's something more severe than the ROL/RF PCB that will cost more than the $180??? Or, if soldering needs to be done, I will not do it...I have always been horrible at soldering, especially on something like this...

So, I guess my main questions are:

Do I need a new ROL/RF PCB?
How is the ROL/RF PCB connected?
Should I open it up and risk a $180+ repair cost?

Thank you very much in advance!

O btw, it fell bottom first (opposite end of hdd)

Quite Possibly.

How is the ROL/RF PCB connected?
Three Screws and a simple USB Like connector.  Its not a USB but I'm just using that as an example.  If you want pictures I'll post em tomorrow.

Should I open it up and risk a $180+ repair cost?
Thats completely up to you and you alone.  Dont take advice of users on this subject matter.  Some will say do it your self others will say send to MS but in the end you will have to decide if you can and are able to fix it yourself.  If might not be the ROL board...

Thanks for the help. I don't need pictures, I'll figure it out.

I think I'll call MS back tommorrow and see if that $130 covers the parts needed (which I doubt)....and if it doesn't I think I'll work on it myself...

Ok, I called MS and they said that the $130 repair fee covers all parts and shipping back to me. But shipping to them is going to be around $40.

I do not have a usb controller to test it with, so I plugged in a flash drive w/ some songs on it, and plugged it into the front usb ports and all was fine.

I still am pretty sure it's the ROL/RF PCB that is my problem...however, since the RF function still works (I was able to test out the media remote) that should mean that the connection to the motherboard is fine, correct? So, thus, the motherboard should be fine.... or, is the connection from the PCB to the mobo wired to where a few wires control the RF and a few control the ROL? (to where it's possible that part of the connector on the mobo broke? (I've had this happen on a laptop of mine where only really, really basic pc cards will even recieve power from the pc card slot)

The Media remote works on IR (Infared)  not the RF board.

Thats why that works and controllers dont.

Oh, that's right, got them confused for a minute there....I've just been driving for 7 days straight from DC to anchorage, AK, so my mind is totally shot still, lol.

Ok, thanks for reminding me, that certainly clears some stuff up.

I bet it's jsut the RF board which you can get pretty cheap, and even if it isn't, you can get a new motherboard for around 130, but you could easily resell the old motherboard on ebay, especially if it works fine except for the rf board part.

Worst case scenario i can think of is that the connector on the motherboard is damaged (mashed/broken off, etc)

Thanks for the input guys, very much appreciated.

Currently, my dad is trying to see if his store (BX/PX) will take it back like they did when our 1.5 yr. old PS2 stopped reading discs a few years ago....

ahh man, i love bx's/px's!!

But my personal opinion: F'd up R/F board. Id say just buy another one off of say.. ebay (you could try the 360 b/s/t as well). Then replace it yourself. (uber uber simple) Then say it doesnt work.. ok, so what? You spent like 10 dollars at most? (i have no idea how much r/f boards are going for these days, so dont quote me on that)

good luck though.
