Replaced The Laser
« on: August 17, 2006, 02:10:00 PM »

Hi all just wanted to share some info with everyone.

I have 2 xbox 360s, one with the Samsung drive which reads everything perfectly and the other one has the dreaded Hitachi 47DJ drive that refuses to read anything other than original.
I have an NEC 3250 DVD burner and using Verbatim media.

After pulling my hair out adjusting pots, trying different versions of firmware I decided to try replacing the laser.  I ordered a new one from mrmodchips.co.uk for about £16.  The laser arrived very quick, there was a problem with installing it but I found out this morning that you have to de-solder the ESD point to get it to work (doh! everyone knows that right?) otherwise the laser dosent light up and the disk dosent spin.

That all aside I managed to get the laser working with originals but once again I put a backup in that works fine with my Samsung and bam! "Unrecognized disk", back to square one!

Think I'm now going to have to try the Pioneer 111D drive that everyone raves about.

If MS wanted to cut down on people ripping them off they needed just to stick these Hitachi drives in every unit!!!

Cheers.

That really is a problem. I wish MS would just put one dvd drive in their system instead of putting multiple drives in at once, but the reason they do it is so they can have competition between the supporting companies and ask for lower costs on the parts. Basically the same thing they do with the companies over seas making the systems. I am actually in the process of doing something with the drive myself, so all I can say is double check for errors and make sure the parts are compatiable.

u actually replaced a laser instead of getting a good burner first?

omg ,  wtf , you pwnt yourself

even doing the pot tweak would be smarter than replacing the laser

As I said in the first post, I tried the Pot trick first..... IT DIDN'T WORK - Thats why I changed the laser as no-one else seems to have tried it before, someone had to be the first.

Now hopefully anyone having the same problems will not bother with replacing the laser as a fix..
