Xbox 360 Does Not Power Up.

So ya had a powered up 360 motherboard exposed and hanging over metal? Real smooooth.

Ya need to start wherever the thing hit metal, then go tracing back from there. It may be right difficult to find out exactly what shorted.

Are you sure the PSU is still in good order? Tried another one?

Is the 5v standby even getting to the 360?

Ohm out the 5v line to ground, then the 12v line to ground, then the 5v line to the 12v line, see what readings ya get.

ok i went to this page
http://forums.xbox-s...howtopic=613160
on the first pic my 5v standby was 7.4
the sec pic was 7.4
all else was normal 5.5 till the last pic the u5b1 and u5b2 are both 7.4
and i cant get 12v readings my understanding of why is because the 360 isnt powered up

I don't know what you measured but...what RDC meant was. Connected your meter between the 12v line  and ground and check the resistance of the line to ground. Also do the same for the 5v line.
DO NOT have the box powered at all or even plugged in.
Sorry but your chances of sorting this are very slim.

do you guys think i should just open one of my other 360s and compare readings?
mark down the differences and then go from there, or just throw it in the trash.

Looks like something somewhere is shorted, if those second readings are Ohms, but the readings on both the 12v and 5v lines should not be steady, they should climb in value as the caps are charging. If this isn't happening there's a short somewhere.

12v line definetely has a problem if those are in ohms. So does the 5v.

The 'typical' FETs that go bad are Q6F1 and/or Q6F2, so ya should pull those and check them first, but since ya shorted the thing out who knows where the real problem could be anywhere.

I wanted to thank you guys for your help Lugnut and RDC. I straightened the pins on the usb port and since I had the 360 broke down already I replace the x clamps and cleaned the thermal gunk off and re-applied a little arctic silver and now I have a 100% functional 360. I would like to ask though, I simply straightened the pins so they weren't shorted out and placed some black electrical tape over the damaged usb port. Where would I be able to purchase a new front usb port assembly so that I can permanently fix this? Its not really necessary for me since I know why its like that but I'd still like to fix it if its not that expensive. Thanks again for the advice you guys really know your stuff... biggrin.gif

Ya can probably pick up a shot board in the 360 B/S/T section of the forums or better post ya need the front USB ports (undamaged) and someone with one might pull if from a board for ya to sell.

As Lugnut stated though unless you're at least a little handy with the soldering iron and have a decent one to heat up the ground pins to remove that thing ya may want someone else to handle the swap. Tearing out Vias or lifting any traces is going to make it a real mess to get straightened out. Ya still have the rear USB port if ya can't swap it out yourself and can always plug a USB Hub into it if ya need more than one port for something.

It's not easy to get it out, I get them out by first solder sucking as much solder off all the pins as i can get. Then putting the mobo in a drill press vice so I dont have to hold it (padded of course so the vice doesnt ruin anything) and then I heatgun the pins.  Gotta do it just right though blast it too long you melt the plastic pretty bad. if you try to remove it and succeed and need another one I have one laying around.

When I power up my 360 it shut down immediately. The PSU turns from orange to green for a split second and then return to orange. Is there is any help to let me determine the cause ?
