a buddy gave me 2 xbox units over the summer, both older units one hdmi and one non-hdmi.
I removed the x-clamps on both and put in the washers-bolts, cleaned up the heatsinks and chip dies then AS5 and sinched down lightly.
one of the consoles worked right away, the other one was problematic and took me about an hour of finding the right pressure on the GPU.... now I can't remember which one was the problem board but I just got the HDMI xbox back last week and opened it up to find 2 of the capacitors ripped out of the board. one was rolling around in the case and the other one missing entirely!
ordered some capacitors of the same size & rating off digi-key.
they came in 2 days, quick, I heated up the solder and pulled out the old broken legs then soldered in the new legs on both capacitors. put the heatsinks back on like I always have, fired it up and red ring... 0021, great, I've tried varying the torque on the bolts holding down the gpu and cpu, tried overheating the unit, wait for a cooldown and try again, nothing.
noted that the dvd drive will not eject and I did find one of the dvd power cable wires had broke from its hold in spot though it still is getting proper connection to the drive.
also I did have to straighten out 3 or 4 pins on the DVD power connector motherboard side, I have no idea how they got ripped out.
all I know is I fixed this guys red ring and flashed his drive perfectly I tested everything played a game or 2 before I gave it back to him. I don't know if he accidentally dropped it and that caused the drive cable & capacitors to break but I cannot explain the missing capacitor that was very odd.
