Xbox 360 Error 0021 Fix Explainded

interesting... I am very confused. But first of all, i would like to ask, how long had you fixed the console, to say that the fix is permanent ?
Because i have the 0021, and i was thinking in buy the xecuter fix...because i have lots of hope in that team.
But if what you say is truth and if the Xecuter fix doesnt work, i will try your fix.. But with all washers , i think...  biggrin.gif  biggrin.gif  biggrin.gif  biggrin.gif  biggrin.gif

i cant believe xbox could have this many problems... they should have a class action even with the 3 yr warranty.

what will happen when the 3 yr warranty is up for hundreds of thousands of people....they wont know how to fix it themselves and it might cost extra to fix.

they should recall all old systems and start replacing each one that is modified.

Hi, just got Error 0021 this morning, re applied AS5 on gpu, overheated the console by unplugging fans, would still not work after like 2 hours of struggling to get it running back again, I was getting 2 lights after a while and the error is now 0011(cpu overheating), but after cooling off I was getting the 3 lights again...  So I left the fans on but blocked the back of the GPU heatsink with a piece of cardboard so taht it does not get any airflow but so that cpu does cool off... let it run for about 15 minutes... no overheating lights yet, I pushed a little on the Southbridge chip... still on the 3 lights.. so I shut it down, boot it right back up, guess what, Booted like a Champ!!, its been on for about an hour and a half now, playing forza motorsports in 1080i, still going strong, I hope this can help someone too, as I was sure my xbox was gone for good this time around!

btw x-clamp was already done in the past on this xbox also pieces of eraser on the ram chips underneat the board when I got 3rol about 6 months ago.. 2005 launch console

Edit: I think blocking the airflow to the gpu and letting the cpu still cool off is the key when trying to overheating it as you do not damage the cpu with too much heat while you heat off the gpu (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Hi, I know its an old thread but oh well.

Just got a 360 elite to fix, owner tried towel trick a few times with limited success. had 3rlod. 0102. Did the m5 bolts with washers fix, 3 between mobo and case, 2 between mobo and heatsink (its worked great on two other consoles before). It seemed to fix it, but the fans were spinning real loud. (i never cleaned off the thermal pad). Cleaned up the gpu only, fans seemed more normal and things were ok again. started to play a game and now ive got another problem, the thing freezes and makes a loud static noise that scared the shit out of me, and dotted lines accross the screen. sometimes it happens on bootup on the 360 logo, sometimers i get ingame for a minute and it happens. I tried clamping down the scaler anna/hanna/ whatever it is chip with a 'c' clamp, and i got to play one race in forza 2 before the cpu overheated (the plastic shield wouldnt fit in there with the c clamp ion the way so the thing overheated with limited airflow).

now getting to the point of 0021.....

I have wireless controllers and the usb recharger kit that plug into th etop of the controller. works fine in my xbox 360. when i plug it into this one, instant 3rlod 0021, wtf? unplug it and reboot, works fine. boot and plug it in while on, instant freeze of whatever the 360 is doing. the dvd drive still opens and closes but no responce from the controller or nothing. I tried all 3 usb ports same thing happend. then I tried plugging in my 2gb usb flash drive, nothing happend turned on fine.

so as long as youre using wirless controllers on this guy and you clamp down the stupid chip in back it works fine, but this is still annoying.

any ideas?

Thanks,

- Dave

Ive just fixed a HDMI with error code 0021, check the continuity of components C2C1, C2C2, C2C3 and C2C4 i found C2C4 to be defective and had no continuity as it had come loose, soldered it back on and works fine now.

thanks for the idea, those arent problematic for me though. I figured since the console works normally but only gives 0021 when i plug in the usb play n charge for the wireless controller. (i did get it from china? but works fine on other non hdmi console...)

I did find out that clamping down somewhat hard on the southbridge chip gave me an immediate 0020 error, which strangely is listed as "GPU Malfunction, similar to error 0102".... unclamping brings it straight back to life.

Also after that clamping once of the scaler chip and now having the southbridge moderately clamped, I just did a few races in forza 2 for about half hour with no crash, fans have been whining loud since the get-go though, probably cause I never cleaned the cpu heatsink only the gpu (before i cleaned the gpu one i still had 0102).

now testing with the southbridge back unclamped...

seems okay after another half hour or so of playing... gonna clean off the cpu heatsink as a final touch and put everything back together and see if it holds up!

hey i know this thread probably died along time ago, but i currently have the 0021 error, iv got the xclamp fix, and i've overheated the GPU and am still getting t
he error, i know from reading this thread it says its to do with the DVD/Southbridge chip

i bought the xbox of a friend for £5 with the entention of fixing it,
however he had opend it up himself to play around with it my guess is,
he seems to damaged the board when trying to remove the xclamps,
i've got some high res pictures below showing the damage,
do you think this damage could be effecting the console and causing this error? its just off the GPU.

Don't waste your time on it.

Too much damage. Even I would not brother, you need to track out each one of the traces,
and check to see if broken, and then run a new wire from end to end to fix the link.

I done boards with clearly one or two broken traces, but this one has at least five or more.

The problem is I have found even with the traces fixed, the GPU or CPU may be damaged,
as have one of the traces damaged, or sometimes push onto the next trace causing a short,
and then applying power before fixing the damage will cause the GPU/CPU to go crazy and burn out.

Here is the area you need to work on if you willing to waste a week of manpower:

hi

there are mixed opinions regarding 0021 error code.. i m facing the same error
let me start from begining

i have old 2006 manufactured console which is banned , i usually patch wave three games to play it to older firmware , i installed prototype into harddisk which was perfect when i tried to run it it asked for an update but  update failed i restarted the console 5-6 times tried to install update through usb and game but didnt worked and finally it gave me e74 , then i heatgunned the board and re applied artic silver 5 the error changed to 0021 i have heated south bridge but no improvement in 0021 , any guess and if this is due to dvd rom flash or firmware how can i be confirm abt it .Physically i cant see any damage to motherboard or circuit ..
i am gettin frustated by this error .

Please help

Yeah I have a couple of these, havn't spent too much time on them, tried reflow, southy heatup and also looking for some obvious issues in connectivity, no luck. I think the 0021 error is more generic then most people think and covers problems from DVD sync to contacts on south-bridge. I do wish someone had some more input but atm I'm out of ideas.
