Building 360 Drive Adapter
« on: August 06, 2006, 06:20:00 PM »

so im tryin to build this adapter here http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=507480
and when i plug it into my pc and my xbox1 odd(extra drive lying around for test) the computer refuses to boot with the xbox drive plugged in, the adapter can be but not the adapter and xbox drive.  The only possible error i could think i made was which direction the pinout is facing.
I thought the pinout was if you are looking at the plug that will go into the drive,

should it be viewed if the plug is allready plugged in the drive from the behind?

edit: reversed the pinout, still same issue,

could it be the wrong caps? im using these from digi-key p/n: p4904-ND

tia,

Building 360 Drive Adapter

I think your problem is that you're using an Xbox 1 drives instead of an Xbox 360 drive... a quick look at the Xbox 1 DVD drive pin out and by pluging that drive in through the adapter you're essentially crossing Ground and 12V

Xbox 1 pinout
01 +12V
02 +5V
03 GND
04 NEJECT
05 TRAY_OUT
06 CD_READY
07 TRAY_IN
08 SER_DATA
09 +12V
10 +5V
11 GND
12 GND

Xbox 360 pinout
01 NC
02 NC
03 NEJECT
04 Tray Status
05 GND
06 +3.3V
07 GND
08 +5V
09 GND
10 +12V
11 GND
12 +12V

Looking at the socket in the back of the dive pin 1 is top left, pin 2 is below it... etc.

Compare pins 9-12 on the two there, you're pretty lucky your PC (or your Xbox 1 drive) hasn't gone up in a ball of smoke.

Take note that just because a connector is the same shape DOES NOT mean that it's compatable. They tend to make things unique in the consumer world to keep out stupid people making stupid mistakes but once you go inside all bets are off.
