Xbox 360 Cpu Types
« on: July 31, 2006, 09:16:00 AM »

I've noticed that 360s seem to have two different packaging variants of the XCPU in them; one made in Taiwan and one in Canada.

I'm sure the internals are exactly the same (they would have to be), but it makes you wonder which CPU is manufactured with the higher quality. To me, the CPUs manufactured by IBM directly (canada) appear to be manufactured with higher quality materials, as opposed to the ones manufactured by Chartered Semiconductor (Taiwan).

Canada

And I wonder why do they Canadian (IBM) cpus have random numbers stamped into the PCB material of the CPU package? ohhh MS, you hold so many secrets...

It would be interesting to compare the error rate between the 2, like if the freezing/3 red lights is more prevalent on one or the other.  Although without actual production numbers on these it would be impossible to determine.

interestingly enough my first 360 had the Chartered XCPU. That 360 gave me a lot of problems. My new one has an IBM XCPU and its been great. i'm sure its coincidental but just thought id point that out.
