Toshiba/samsung Drive Not Reading Dvd's
« on: July 29, 2006, 05:29:00 AM »

My Toshiba/Samsung has always given me a little trouble freezing up from time to time while playing Oblivion. This time playing PGR3 I left it on pause for a while, and when I came back the 360 unit had turned off on me. It boots up fine and all functionality is normal but the dvd drive. It can read cd's, but not DVD's (movies or 360 games).

Bought the 360 early Jan, late Feb from Fry's, so warranty is over.

I tried cleaning the lens but same result.
I ordered an XBOX 360 replacement lens from Divineo but it is DOA. (still waiting after e-mailing them, on how to send back the DOA lens)
I am wondering if a different drive such as the Philips VAD6037/21 from etch4sale would work in my 360 since it did not come with that brand of dvd-drive originally. Its also only $65 on their site.

Any thoughts on the Philips VAD6037/21 would be appreciated.

Sorry, now that I think about it the 360 laser lens from Divineo I have read is for a Hitachi. The laser lens moved physically but did not emitt a read light at all. Maybe I just need to order a 360 laser lens specifically for the samsung drive. Just a thought.

I Thought that the lasers of the 2 drives were the same.

About that laser, it should work according to some post @ xboxhacker.net

I kinda have the same problem, unmodified sammy drive wont read xbox/360 games but will read movies(dvd). Now it says "Open Tray" when a disk is in..
(At first sometimes dirty disk errors, but got worse till this far)

About that philips thing, that would be a lot harder, you'll need to reflash it somehow so that it has the same key as your recent dvd drive.

Wich divineo did you buy it from? (.com .co.uk .cn etc)

Oh and btw THIS IS IMPORTANT:

You have to DEsolder this blob before the laser unit will work (protecting for transport):

I guess I forgot to read the laser lens replacement tutorial fully. Thanks for pointing out the part about the de-soldering. The lens now emitts the laser and the dvd drive functions perfectly. Thanks a lot for your help.

I think M$ should really change the warranty period to 9 months or 1 year. Or I should have bought it from Costco.
