that is half true
the way we write php u van use any theing there its a quiry YES but it its used to get the id of the page insted of linking to the page directy so insted of having load of html pages u can have a minimun of one php page and have you whole site in the one pahe and the ?q= ID will tell the server what info to get and show it you realy simple
This is also only half true. Because any developer worth a lick will obfuscate page queries behind an htaccess file or httpd.conf htaccess setup with mod_rewrite.
Which means, in laymen's terms, you type in www.foo.com/bar and serverside it does www.foo.com/?q=bar or whatever else you want it to. This keeps users from knowing what, if any, serverside processor you are using, as well as hiding the real document structure of the site.
