no they arent cheap they are several hundred dollars... powered usb extenders use either CAT5 or fiber to extend the distance. the limitation of usb is 15feet and even at 15ft many products will puke out. thats why almost all usb cables you get are 6ft
you can chain together a few extenders but it starts to get flakey after 3 of them.
the part i listed that i sell at work isnt cheap i mean its 55 bucks but its cheaper than tiger direct.
but no you can not route it thru a switch or router. USB can not be converted into IP packets. which is what a switch or hub does.
Umm... several hundred dollars? i can get a USB hub at any computer store for $20 or less - you can get one at Fry's for less than $10 (most under $10 are USB 1.1) - but most of those dont come with a power cord, but you can always buy a universal power cord if you want for some models. for example:
http://shop3.outpost...CH:MAIN_RSLT_PG doesnt come with a power cord, but you can get one if you want.
to bypass the 15 ft rule: from the computer to powered hub: 15ft powered hub to 2nd powered hub: 15ft - there! you just got 30ft! you can only do this with 126 hubs though - the maximum number of devices is 127 and you need one for the XSATA. therotcally that will give you 1905ft from the computer to the XSATA.
but that would be expensive.
if you need to go a bit past the 15ft mark, and you can find 2 or 3 cheap powered hubs (and USB extension cords) that would do it.

I was wondering.. would this void your 360s warranty? Not sure if it crosses the line.
i dont see how it would - you are not opening the 360 up. some of the things you might be able to do with the files on the HDD could violate the terms of conditions of xbox live, but not your warranty.
