Toshiba Samsung DVD Drive and Warning Sticker

Anybody got any theory why the drive is very loud when playing Xbox 360 games from DVD compared to old Xbox games (on the same 360 console that is) where it's very silent ?

Does Xbox 360 DVDs spin faster that Xbox DVDs maybe ?

It must be certain hitachi drives because mine (hitachi)  is whisper quiet. I can only hear it when the volume is off and i am closer than 3 feet

yes T'ulkas, 360 games read at 12x i believe, and xbox games at 2-5x

Joergen is right about the samsung one, it is a hissing sound, its extremely loud on my machine tho, i always have the volume up a bit to flood out the sound, get right in to a game in a dark room, then when it loads or is at a quiet part i snap back to reality when i hear the hsssssssssssssssssssssss noise lol blink.gif

i checked when i went home on lunch and it appears to be the sammy, BUT, there is a whole in the front of the tray vs. the hitachi that has the holes in the rear of the tray.

i'll double check but i swear thats the way mine is. (a hole in the front of the tray..)

depends, if noise bothers you (which it is kindof anoying to me) then the hitachi, cause its quieter, how ever the samsung can read more discs, so when it comes to mod chips later on it its life the samsung is gonna be the one to play all your DVD-Rs, altho by then there will probably be another drive type or 2 biggrin.gif

I have a Hitachi and it is extremely loud - enough so that it distracts from playing.
You need to turn up the sound then! lol

I know I'm not the only one out there that has seen or thought of this. Have any of you guys heard of D-Skin? The clear disc protectors? They work very well for solving any scratching concerns. Instead of your $60 game being scratched, this little plastic thing absorbs all the scratches. And at about $1 a piece if you only buy the 5 pk,  I think that is a very good investment. You guys are geniuses... why haven't you done this already???

That warning didnt help too much. What did I do about 3 hours into playing oblivion? Try to gently pick up the console and move it over a foot. OK, they were right but I wasn't expecting it to happen that easliy.

Fortunatally, the disc was repairable using my tshirt, and about an hour of rubbing the disc with it (very light small random scratches are much better then a giant cd-was-rotating-against-a-plastic-corner scratch).

D-Skins are probably one of the worst things you can do to your DVD drive. While they DO protect your discs from scratches, the cure in this case is worse then the disease. Because they're so cheaply made they're typically not very balanced, this causes added vibrations that will not only make your drive more noisy but it will also significantly shorten the lifespan of the servo motor through having to push the extra weight (it DOES make a differences to such delicate electronics). In addition to motor burnout you also risk bearing run-out, which will probably occur before the servo motor burns out, even worse if bearing run out occurs it will make your drive far more likely to scratch discs you put in it. Both of these things can also significantly increase the noise level of your drive.
