Toshiba Samsung DVD Drive and Warning Sticker-- Posted by XanTium on March 9 00:42 EST
Two brands of DVD drives have been found in the Xbox 360 so far. There's the Hitachi-LG GDR-3120L and in some newer manufactured consoles people have found Toshiba-Samsung TS-H943 drives (which are reported to be much quieter).
Llamma.com posted a nice picture where both drives, with open tray, are placed next to eachother so you can easily find out which drive you have without opening your Xbox 360 case (just compare the shape of the DVD tray).

It also looks like Microsoft added a new warning note on the DVD tray. You probably remember the disc scratching issue that was caused when moving the console from horizontal to vertical position with a disc inside. The note now warns users for this: "Do not move console with disc in tray."
Below is a picture of the new warning sticker courtesy llamma.com

I like the new sticker because new xbox owners will actually see that its there... unlike me and many others who thought their drive was busted the first time they powered their xbox on.

You listed it backwards.  The samsung is louder of the two.  I have both.  Recieved Hitachi on launch and Samsung(with disc warning sticker) last month.  No comparison.  Samsung is way louder.   cool.gif

Samsung here.  Purchased Xbox on Dec 22nd.  I would have thought it would be a Hitachi.  This drive is pretty loud.

What a load of crap warning. A warning not to do something with no reason? At least if you explain why you don't want to move the console then maybe people won't... otherwise they might assume it something trivial... how many warnings in manuals etc do poeple listen to??? Most of them are common sense (eg don't scratch your cd....)

Without any valid reason, why would people obey this sticker?

Don't open your x360.....even this gives a reason why not.

Yep, I had a sammy and the 360 broke shortly after getting it. I got a replacement with a hitachi and it is much quieter.

My first 360 has the Hitachi-LG Drive and a new one I got has the Toshiba-Samsung one.

As far as noise goes, they both seemed about the same to me when I tested them next to each other.
However, the Toshiba-Samsung was able to read some cheap dvd-r movies that my Hitachi-LG couldn't so the Toshiba-Samsung reads more DVDs than the other one.

Ive got mine in my desk next to my tower and when it's reading the DVD the whole desk vibrates.  You can rest your hand on any part of the desk and feel it.
