You think you could take a picture of the tray and post it?... It is a Samsung drive right?

checked my drive this morning and guess what? I was wrong... it is an LG with the tray picture above...  rolleyes.gif I guess my memory fooled me on that one.

The drive is still pretty quiet, I loaded up a few games with my theater sound turned off. it makes a little bit of a grinding noise about a second after the tray is closed and then the spin up spin down noises are fairly quiet, certainly quieter then my Xbox 1 or my PC... The fans seem to make less noise then the fans in my projector which are rated at 34dB. But in all respect This is in my basement which is pretty cold most of the time (kept at ~55F ambient when not in use, we warm it up to 65F when we go down there).

Turning the console vertically it got louder, the grinding/tray noise was the same but it seemed like the disc was spinning faster as well as the fans.

All this talk about quiet.. loud.. and whatever inbetween.. really doesn't mean much to anyone. It's all relative. I personally have a small amount of hearing loss.. so I don't hear 100% of what everyone else does. However, I do hear certain ranges incredibly well.

Before we can go around saying one drive is loud.. etc.. we need a noise standard. Preferably one where decibels are measured in a quantitative and scientific way that we can establish as a standard. We then add to that measurements for idle, dvd game play, dvd movie play, cd play etc.

Short of that.. all I see here are people using their subjective sense to guage noise and compare it.

In my unscientific testing.. (I don't have a proper db tester) I have made recording using my mic turned all the way up and extended to where I keep one of each Xbox and Xbox360.

Overall, I found my 360 to be quieter, however, on Game DIsk load, it peaks a bit higher. (keep in mind.. that the recording does not exlude the noise of the fans as they ramp up speed.

Anyways.. loud.. quiet.. we need a standard. Otherwise.. it's just a bunch of hooey.

I still find it hilarious that people will void warranties to do an unnecessary mod. Worse.. bragging that they can now "safely" change the console orientation while it runs. Keep in mind.. the rubber/foam compound you now have in place.. will, and does break down. Given time.. you will damage and kill the drive with the debris that will collect and bounce around inside. LLama didn't tell you that now did they?

But.. I'm sure you enjoyed the chance to go inside and mod something.. so I guess it's not all bad.

voiding a warranty on a perfectly good , quiet, and working console isn't my idea of fun.

I will however void it.. when I start getting review samples during the next 30-60 days of some key new products.

Nice...new key products.  I won't venture a guess.

I reoriented my box (safely-turned off) to horizontal.  No difference in DVD noise, at least with NHL 2k6.

not to add fuel to the fire but i just noticed tonight that my premium is EXTREMELY loud when playing PGR3. It is spinning the disk at what seems to be full speed without stopping at any time. Right now it is lying flat and I havent tried turning it the other way but I dont see how that would make a difference. I did however pop in a dvd for the first time and it was the exact opposite.. all I could hear were the fans. I hope someone can figure out a way to quiet the thing down cause its just obnoxiously loud right now..

Using a premium one here, drive is quite loud though, shame cos the console itself is very quiet

Same, just got mine today too. I forcee my first mod to be changing the drive to a quiet one once it becomes a feasible option.

Samsungs are louder.  I have both.  Both Premiums.  The LG is the quite one. I got the LG on Nov 22 and the Samsung yesterday.  Its so loud it bugs me.  Both trays look totally different.   Is there anyway to look on the outside of the box and determine what drive is has before buying?
