Without cracking the case, the info in this thread isn't that helpful. We need to know why some are loud and some are quiet. If there are variations in manufacture then its really just a lottery. Model details please.

I've played kameo, COD2, Condemed, and PDZ.  The only game that makes the dvd drive loud as hell is COD2.

I believe the reason for this, is because COD2 is the only 360 game that does not use the hdd, and thereby is continually loading from off the dvd drive while it's blazing at 12x.  All the other games i played must load from off the hdd after it has initially loaded from the dvd.

Both my 360's have the LG DVD drive in em and they are really fuckin loud, the other drive used in teh 360 is the Samsung/Toshiba, and it is a lot quieter supposedly.

I'm not going to open my 360 yet  biggrin.gif .  I've only played Call of Duty so far and boy does it spin loud with this game.  I'll be getting Perfect Dark and Condamned tomorrow lets see if it's still loud.  I post a pic of my DVD tray later with my model number.  Maybe I'll add in a vid of the noise too.

That would help...

If you've already opened up your 360, post a picture of the DVD tray and manufacturer/model, along with the noise level of the drive... From there we'll be able to determine which drive is the quietest and what drive you have without opening up your 360.

To start this off (picture and model taken from Llamma.com):

The drive is a Hitachi-LG GDR-3120L.

I don't personally have the drive myself, so have no idea when it comes to the noise level. Let us know if you do have this drive...

I'd say mine is pretty much a medium as far as noise level if you have it vertical, Horizontally I find it quiet.

Have others tried this?  Compared volume vertical an horizontal?  I will tonight, to see if orientation has an effect on DVD noise.  Maybe it spins faster when vertical huh.gif

I haven't opened my 360 (and I'm not going to so don't ask) but I can tell you my tray looks nothing like that LG posted above and it's very quiet (more quiet then my Xbox 1s)

EDIT ...it's also horizontal if your curious.

Now we just need someone with a Samsung to post a picture of their tray...

EDIT: Twisted have you tried it vertically? Is it any louder?

Hi. New member here.

Just to let you know that its total pot luck and the odds will get better as time goes on as to the noise your 360 makes. Some units are fitted with much quieter but more expensive fans and DVD drives which will be introduced more as the 360 sells more and makes a profit. Same with the last XBox. The reason a few "good 'uns" are dotted around is so media reports, reviews and forums like this aren't full of "The 360 is too noisy....agreed....agreed....agreed" which gives it a bad image. But its too expensive to have quiet fans and drives in every machine. Happened with the last XBox and the PS2 too. My XBox is fairly noisy but my cousin's (who got his a year later) is whisper quiet.

Best way to reduce noise is to have it lying flat. The 360s fans will speed up and down according to temperature and the heat builds up more when its upright. Also your drive will make slightly less noise when running in a flat 360. Unfortunately the drive is a noisy bugger running at full speed (16x). Look it at this way. It has to transfer data to fill up that 512Mb RAM and put some data aside on the hard drive for later so it needs to be fast so you don't have 2 minute loading times.

Whats the 360's noise like when running XBox titles? I'm sure its much quieter.

This is my DVD drive, and it's loud.  I didn't orient it horizontally yet though.

Right... It seems like the Samsung is the quieter of the two. We just need someone to post a picture of a Samsung tray now.

I haven't tried mine vertically yet... I'll try to get a picture of the tray tonight if I can (I've got a business dinner to go to so I might not get to it).

As for the person claiming they make "a few good units" I don't agree... Xbox V1.0s ALL had thompson drives... ALL of them. and they ALL had the same fans too (I know a division of my company manufactures them).

It's true that later revisions had improved equipment, but I don't believe they make X amount of product better to help reviews.

Some consoles are just naturally better then others, like any product manufactured some are more closer to spec. If anything they'd grab a group of 100 or so, find the better one and ship those off to reviewers. But as someone who's IN manufacturing I can tell you they certainly don't purposefully make X amount better to help keep people quiet.

The bit about making certain good units is absolute nonsense.
As for noise levels etc. I can't hear any fans or drives on mine for the surround sound blasting out.
the only noise I hear is an occassional banging noise but I ignore it as its just the neighbours banging on the wall to complain about the sound level

Everyone's perception of what is "loud" versus what is "quiet" is going to be different from person to person.  One person might have a lot of stuff running at once, one person might be for anal about it than the next, heck one person might be a little more deaf than the next.  I'm fricken tired of hearing people whine about the noise then ask "is you're LOUD or QUIET?"

So, here's MY perception:

66 decibles @ 1 inch from the center of the drive bezel while loading COD2 with nothing else turned on.

Get out your SPL meters and measure so we can get some REAL/IMPARTIAL comparisons...

My XBox was a bit noisy but not intrusive but as time has gone on the fans got much noiser. Its very noticeable during quieter parts in games and is really beginning to bug me these past few months.

Long story short: I hope when I get a 360 that a year down the line it doesn't become ridiculously loud as the fans and drive motors wear down. From what I've heard and playing my friend's 360 it is loud.

Funny this never bothered me before but I think its all the time exposed to humming computers and consoles over the past years its something I couldn't be arsed with anymore. Just bought a quiet case fan and PSU for my PC.

EDIT:: Forgot to mention, 66dB is pretty bad. About 45-50dB is what a noisy AMD PC would make.
