Xbox 360 Usb Wireless Question
« on: January 10, 2006, 11:39:00 AM »

What keeps somebody from just using a regular usb 802.11g usb adapter like the one pictured below?

The only thing I can think of is because you might have to install software to use such a device.

You answered your own question. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

That is exactly why you can't use anything but the ms wireless usb adapter... The xbox has no built in drivers to use it, therefore its useless.

You could use one that plugs into the ethernet port, though.

Yeah, I didn't really think of that until I started typing it out. It was my friend that actually wanted to know if it would work or not. He's can be a cheap-ass sometimes.

Thanks for the reply.

You can use a wireless bridge though and plug into the ethernet port. This is a wireless router that will also function as a bridge, wireless-G and only 19.99 at CompUSA. I use one and they work well. A one year warranty. It has an entry in the setup menu to switch it to function as a bridge or it can remain as a router.

Zyxel

I wouldn't get a router that doubles as a bridge.  Instead, just get a bridge.  ~$50 online.  I use a linksys and a dlink just fine.  Heck, the dlink mimics the official xbox 1 adapter perfectly.  The xbox 1 even sees it as the official adapter and can configure it!

I would wait until the MS USB ones go on sale. I got mine at K-Mart for $50. The wirless bridges work fine, but I like not having another power supply to plug in and you also have to have a CAT 5 cable from your 360 to the bridge - messy...

I like how the USB one is powered by the port and clips on cleanly to the back of the 360 BUT, I agree that $100 for the thing is absurd.
