Ring Of Light Errors Defined
« on: December 01, 2005, 10:09:00 PM »

If you find your unit not giving any video and the ring of light has red quadrants instead of the normal green then there is a problem that you need to look into. This thread is meant to be the official thread for discussing and determining the meanings of the red lights, their quadrants and fixes (if they apply).

I am not sure how the ring of light reacts to an error screen as i have not run across it yet, all of the following information is from my notes which I obtained from searching these forums and from the M$ support site.

I have grouped each problem with the description, problem, solution and added the original xbox's equivalent to the problem so people without units can relate to what the problem and know what to expect.

1. All four lights flash red

Problem: The audio/video cable is either not correctly inserted into the system or it is not being detected.

Solution: Remove and then reinsert the cable.

Xbox equivalent: Flashing green/orange

2. Top Left & Bottom Left flash red

Problem: The system is overheating.

Solution: Allow the unit to cool down (may take up to a couple hours). If the problem persists verify the unit has proper air flow and not within a confined space such as an entertainment center. The PSU is prone to overheat when it is in tight spaces, verify it has space around it and can ventilate.

Xbox equivalent: Flashing Orange

3. Top Left, Lower Left & Lower Right flash red

Problem: There is a hardware problem with the unit.

Solution: Hardware problems are always vague, much like the flashing red/green of the original xbox. Little is known about this error but there have been reports that it is caused by the hard drive. If you are receiving this error and have a hard drive unit attached then remove it and power the unit. If your unit boots fine then power it down again and install the drive. Power the unit on once more to verify the problem has gone away or persists.

If you don’t have a hard drive, the problem persisted after removing the drive or after you put it back on then there is something else wrong. This needs more research.

Xbox equivalent: Flashing red/green

4. Lower Right flash red

Problem: There is a hardware problem with the unit.

Solution: unknown, needs more research.

Note: From various posts people have stated that when there is an error number on screen there is a single flashing light. The single flashing light may indicated a hardware problem and the number indicates which piece of hardware is causing the problem.
