Should I Worry?
« on: November 27, 2005, 10:21:00 PM »

What's up guys, I've had some freezing issues with my 360 and I'm wondering what you guys think.  The first night I played madden flawlessly for hours, and i went to bed a happy man.  Second day, however, I got a freeze in madden while navigating the Live menu.  After I left the lobby, it sent me to menu "abyss"; the system was on and i could access the guide button functions, but the madden screen was simply without a menu for me to navigate.  After mashing buttons for a minute or so, the system froze there.  I figured no biggie, must be a game bug.  Then later on in the day after a couple more hours of play it froze during a game at the playcall screen.  Now i was getting a little peeved, but i decided to try out perfect dark with a buddy.  15 minutes into a multiplayer game, it freezes again.  At this point i'm getting really pissed, so i felt the 360 to see if it was overheating.  The system was definitely warm, and i realized that there probably wasnt enough room behind the system, plus i figured the power brick was too close to it.  So i moved the 360 to a much more ventilated area and seperated it from the power supply.  Low and behold, 3 hours of gaming bliss, no problems at all.  However, this is where the story gets really interesting....

hollywood video got their rentals in, so i decided to go pick up a couple.  I rented king kong and nba2k6.  I went home and popped in king kong, started a game and right after the opening movie it would freeze within 5 minutes every single time (and once on the bootup logo).  I was irate; i figured my console was definitely defective.  I called MS and aranged for the famed overnight shipping box.  This problem wasnt going to stop me from gaming in the meantime however, so I kept playing the other games I have.  I started playing, and the system was working like a dream.  I brought King Kong back to hollywood, and the manager at gamecrazy tested it out on his demo unit, and it seemed to work fine which concerned me a bit.  Anyway, i picked up Quake 4 to replace it.  again, no problems with that game.  So here's how the games break down by time:
Condemned: 1 1/2 hours played, no freezes
Madden: 15 (?) hours played, 2 freezes
PDZ: 1 1/2 hours played, 1 freeze
PGR: 45 minutes played, no freezes
Call of Duty: 6 1/2 hours played, no freezes
Quake 4: 1/2 hour played, no freezes
NBA 2k6: 3 hours played, no freezes
King Kong: endless freezing

Again, I have had no freezing problems except for King Kong since i moved the console to a better area.  However, the King Kong disc worked fine in the Gamecrazy kiosk, but then again every laser is different so it could be a poor press of the game (plus the fact that it froze once on the 360 bootup furthers this point).  At this point I'm thinking I have a working system, but i havent been able to track down another copy of Kong to test yet.  What do you guys think? Thanks for any input.
