i deleted everything it came with, and im still at 13gb

maybe if you factor in the 3GB thats lost in the file system (the actual physical size of the hdd (ie, GB) differs from what a file system actually sees (hence, my 160GB drive is seen as 153 by windows XP)) and all the stuff used for the dashboard it explains the lost 7GB

the 7 gigs you guys are missing are for system files and partitions. just like the xbox, the C drive was for system files, the X, Y, Z drives were used for caching. if you want all your 20 gigs you wont have a running xbox.

Well how do you explain core systems, without a hard drive?

you play any xbox1 games on it? if so ur hd gets partitioned for the x,y,z as well as the e drive (i think) so it might be showing just the free space that can be used for 360 content. the x,y,z partitions are for caching of the original xbox 1 games and the e drive partition is for ur xbox1 saves (maybe 360 saves too, i dunno) if ur really that concerned about it do a complete hd format to zeroize it.(the reason your 360 works without hd  is because the dashboard is completely stored on the motherboard...somewhere, i dunno)  maybe you'll see a difference then. then again i could be wrong on all of this since i havent tried any of it cause i dont have a freakin 360 yet! i'm military living oversea's and no online retailer i could find would ship to me. and the bx on base hasnt gotten them in yet. i'm starting to get pissed off! sorry for the rant.

Explain what? How they operate with out a hard disk installed? 360 games are not supposed to be written to rely on the hard disk for caching. Core systems can't play XBOX games, so there's no need for legacy XBOX caching support.

If you delete the media on the drive, you get the drive up to around 13GB free. The drive is about 18GB in size - 20 billion bytes is about 18 Gigabytes. Figure at least 2GB for XBOX caching, another 3GB for 360 caching and "stuff" and there you have it.

I think swodie was refering to when morecowbell666 said all the stuff used for the dashboard it explains the lost 7GB
if the dash is on the hd how does a core system work. (i think he was asking)

obviously the dash aint on the hd so i think the answers about it been caching is prolly right

plain and simple... you buy a 200GB hard drive.. you only get 180-190 GB... they round it off... yes i know it's a bitch but EVRYONE does it... seagate, maxtor, WD, ect... so dont worry about it it's normal. some people will have +-1GB... there's nothing you can do about it... (exept when moded then you change it tongue.gif)

Is it possibly a partition that we don't know about, or can't find or see using the xbox? Maybe a partition to store like game saves and game crap? Who knows? I'd say 2-3 gb are indeed the 'not included' space that is 'included' on every hd, however what about the other 4-5 gb?

The xbox 360 hard drive has 3 files on it that you cannot delete:
1.)Emulator software(why you need a hard drive in order to play origional xbox games)
2.)Emulator patches (put in halo 2 for the first time and you get a loadin screen.. the xbox is storing a emulator patch on yors xbox
3.)System files (Verication files that it is a valid xbox 360 hard drive and so on....)
-------------------
that answers your question
------------------
for more information (If you understand this)
The hard drive has 3 partitions on it:
1.)Emulator
2.)System files
3.)User Files

When you click on "format hard drive" it just formats the "User Files" partition.
----------------
head on over to the hacking section/SATA/Larger hard drive thread for more information on this topic
