For everyone that is crashing/having heat problems of any sort. Are you running in high def? Has anyone that crashed or overheated not been running in high def? I have a 360 myself and havent had any troubles and I am wondering if it's because I am just running in standard def.

P.S. gprime, Why is your tray face silver? Mine is white...Is that just a difference from the core model and the fully loaded one?

I don't see why it would..but then again I'm not sure. I say its time we open this thing up and find out whats generating so much heat!

Well I would imagine a higher resolution would ask of more from the system, and I am interested in using high def, i just dont want to hook it up and be like WOW this is awesome and then *poof* it's busted.  ohmy.gif

That is def. not a GPU problem but a interference problem. Make sure you dont have any power cords going over the video cables, or have the video cables riding next too any sorta AMP, if that doesnt fix it check the connectors on the cords (think someone didnt shield it correctly)

This might not be specifically overheating but at the same time it DOES look like it, and as mentioned earlier, I had a friend who overclocked his ATI card in his comp, and it started to flake out pretty badly. Afterward, even running it at normal speeds/temperatures didn't help, because the damage was already done. And from looking at the picture again, it definitely is blocking the main intake. I looked at the demo at work today again, and I noticed that not only is there a cutout under the console, there is actually a set of 4 feet suspending it a good 1/4 inch over the surface of the plexiglass/plastic. The interference thing COULD be a factor but that's pretty severe interference, don't ya think? My money's still on either texture memory or the GPU itself being damaged, either from heat or possibly a manufacturing defect.

Waaait... That's odd... I just realized something... the power brick in his picture appears to show an AMBER light? That's for standby mode, when it's running it should be green, right? Maybe it's something related to the brick? Weird... Or maybe the brick is indicating an error by the amber LED? Just a thought... Seems odd... Of course it could just be the color of the picture is off here... Hmm...

I'm running my Xbox 360 in Standard Definition mode cause i don't got HDTV. So 480i is the only option for me atm.. And i haven't had any problems with my 360 yet.. I've played at most about 3 to 4 hours at a time with any game, or just leaving the 360 idle for a long time in the dashboard.

I don't think the overheating problem would have to do with people running in hi-def mode. I'm guessing alot of people on these forums were victims of a very bad batch of xbox 360's.. or it really has to do with proper ventilation for the system. I personally think I got my 360 in a proper area for air flow and i have it standing vertical. my Power brick is in a shelf but has about 3 inches breathing room on all sides.. tho its an open concept stand shelf tower.. so theres lots of cutout corners with air to go in.

Also, I don't run any other heat generating electronics beside my 360 when it is in use. Its the only system on in my room along with my TV, other than my PC at one time.

yeah the tv i have only supports 480p wich isnt a big step up. aswell as the fact that i could only get the core system so the video cables are standard...wish i had a hdtv  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sleep.gif) i have simpithy for those who have messed 360s. i would be so mad if after waiting for 10hrs in line only to find out that its broken. although i am still curious to know if someone has a crashed 360 only running in 480i. the screenshot of the xbox crashing is on an lcd tv and also this problem is shown on a nice tv so im guessing their both using either 720p or 1080i..

P.S. does that girls finger look wierd to you?

Is it possible for the Xbox 360 to RUN w/o all the power it needs hence making components suffer but not shut off?

I get pretty heavy video artifacting in Perfect Dark Zero in 480i (SDTV) or 720P (HDTV) pretty much as soon as I start playing.

Other games get it a bit as well - but PD0 pretty much starts up right away.

I'm gonna give it a month or so (or at least till after Xmas) before contacting M$ since there's no point dealing with the store it was purchased at since they've got nothing to exchange it for.

Hi, I was just linked here from gamefaqs where we were discussing the same problem.  I had it happen only once and it was not too long after turning the system on so I don't think heat was an issue.  Just before that I was screwing around with my cable box and trying to change the input from Component to HDMI.  I just bought a DVI-HDMI cable and hooked it up to the TV.  Right after that was when I saw the graphic problems with the 360.  I don't know if this had anything to do with it or not but I pulled the DVI-HDMI cable and went back to just component cables for the cable and I have yet to see the problem again.  Is it possible I was getting some kind of interference from the DVI-HDMI cables?

I gaurentee everyone this is NOT a heating issue.  I just so happen to have this problem (not quite as extreme though) when I turned on my system earlier tonight.  The system was completely fresh and I got those same artifacts in different places on the screen.  When I turned the system on, the artifacts first appeared in the upper left had corner of the dashboard.  I put in COD and the artifacts appeared on the menu in the brighter areas of the screen.  All I had to do was restart the system (via switching the switch on the video cable from TV back to HDTV... since because I thought that was where the problem could have been) and it cleared it all up.  My guess is it's just some sort of hiccup with the GPU or even the video plug not being secure enough (or the switch not being secure enough)

Again, I HIGHLY doubt this is a heating issue.

Another way to comfirm this is to see if anyone with the core system is having this problem... maybe it could be a problem with the HD cable.  Just a thought.

i agree with you its not a heating issue... it has only happend to me once so far. i just turned it on an resumed a Call of Duty 2 save when i seen that blue matrix crap it the dark corners of a room... couldnt of been on more then 2 or 3 mins... i restarted my xbox 360 (love the new wireless controlers) an it was back to normal... seems to be just a HD problem from what ive been reading... got mine set to 1080i... could it be those wierd MS HD cables...? guess not... doesnt seem like a big problem so far, has anyone called/talk to MS about it...?

all the issues I've seen so far seem to be caused by the video scaling chip and not the GPU (they are not the same thing).

the issues I've seen so far wouldn't be affected by running in SD/HD (any res) as the game will ALWAYS render to the same resolution (1280x720 for most) and it will always scale from source (game) to dest (video) regardless of what mode it is in.

my tip would be just the same as the others already mentioned in many places.

1. move the brick off the carpet - yes it will make a difference
2. ensure the unit is well ventilated and not above another heat source (ie - on top of a TV/amp)
3. if the issues occurs turn off the unit, remove the power (unplug from the unit) give it 15seconds and replug - try again.
4. if you are in a hot/humid place don't be cheap with the aircon.

Hmm...

My 360 was doing something similar last night.  Red and blue dots all over the place.  I checked all the cables, everything was secure, nothing near them to interfere...  So I restarted the system, and they went away.  Kind of odd.  However, my system froze 3 times on seperate occasions while playing.  Once during Halo 2, once while pulling my guide up in the dashboard, and once in Perfect Dark 0.  Everything is vented well the system is in a large part of a cabinet, and the back has a huge portion cut away so cables can pass through, so airflow is not a problem.  I Have the power brick elevated by two small items, one on each end, to hold it 4 inches up so its airflow is fine.

I think I may just be a magnet for defective products.  My Xbox 1, is my 6th.  The previous 5 have had various errors.  Anywhere from dirty disc, just not booting, freezing, and one with a severe framerate problem.  This 6th one just started freezing and booting to a red LED, but upping the voltage of both fans to 12v and running it with the top off fixed it.  My first PS2 didn't play DVD movies, and my first GameCube seemed to enjoy freezing on SSBM.  I've been through several NES's also, but who hasn't...
