Xbox 360 GPU Artifacts

Oh man after seeing those screens, the pain and suffering came back to haunt me smile.gif

Anyway. I was the once proud owner of the infamous ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB vid card and the thing started displaying artifacts JUST like those in the scrn shots after about 4 months of use. It then went to become unbearable. What was surprising is that just like many of you, rebooting the PC helped at first and working on the PC in 2D was fine and caused no problems. Only in 3D games did the artifacts pop up all over the place. The problem was probably due to overheating but most likely just a faulty GPU design on ATI's part which caused overheating.

I also built a system for my friend, with the exact same Radeon 9800, his started having artifacts about a year and a half later and had to be replaced for a different card (NVIDIA never has problems like this btw).

So like I said, after seeing those very familiar artifacts, I can safely say that you should replace your 360 ASAP. This will get worse with time. It's sad to see this problem, especially since i'm getting my 360 tommorow and i laid 825$ for the silver bundle from gamestop. (bastards stuck me with GUN)

I never knew the 9800's even had problems, lol.  I have one in the comp I'm usin' right now and have never had a problem (it's been 3 years now?).  I guess it's just one of those things.

Everyone in this thread talks about "all the problems" like this is an epidemic. I have three systems. None show any problems. I would be willing to guess that 99 out of a hundred or better are having no problems. Those folks don't post anything though. 1% of half a million machines is 5,000 systems -- and all those folks would be hitting problems at about the same time. It creates the illusion of massive problems.

I love it that people are somehow experts on how MS "rushed" the system to market. They have been working on it for three f'ing years -- hardly a rush job.

It sucks to have a problem with a new and expensive system, but it happens. Call MS and get it replaced.

Probably one on the best posts in any thread on any site discussing 360 "issues"

Let's take every name.. of every person with ANY 360 issue.. from this site.. add the names from other sites.. take that total.. and put that number over the number of launch consoles in the wild.

You don't need to be a math majoy to deduce that the problem is not systemic.. and surely not an epidemic.

But people.. who feel "burned" also are the most vocal. As long as we know they are just ranting and venting.. and don't represent even a minority.. much less a majority of user epxeriences with the 360.

On a radar.. they wouldn't register as a blip. Hell.. on a radar.. they could be ignored as a possibly booger on the screen. smile.gif

Sorry to bring this old ass thread up but I got the artifacts today on COD2. My system was horizontal in a well ventilated area. I turned it off for 10 mins and unplugged all cables etc and moved it to a more ventilated area but put it vertical. I tryed COD2 again ..... same thing. I tryed my other games and they were 100% fine.

My first 360 had artefacts as well when playing perfect dark after a while. I've spoken to a couple of folks that have had this problem, where you have the console doesn't make a difference with this problem, mine was wide out in the open in the middle of the desk as was the power supply and it still did it after 20 mins or so. Got mine swapped by MS.

Hmm...

My 360 was doing something similar last night.  Red and blue dots all over the place.  I checked all the cables, everything was secure, nothing near them to interfere...  So I restarted the system, and they went away.  Kind of odd.  However, my system froze 3 times on seperate occasions while playing.  Once during Halo 2, once while pulling my guide up in the dashboard, and once in Perfect Dark 0.  Everything is vented well the system is in a large part of a cabinet, and the back has a huge portion cut away so cables can pass through, so airflow is not a problem.  I Have the power brick elevated by two small items, one on each end, to hold it 4 inches up so its airflow is fine.

I think I may just be a magnet for defective products.  My Xbox 1, is my 6th.  The previous 5 have had various errors.  Anywhere from dirty disc, just not booting, freezing, and one with a severe framerate problem.  This 6th one just started freezing and booting to a red LED, but upping the voltage of both fans to 12v and running it with the top off fixed it.  My first PS2 didn't play DVD movies, and my first GameCube seemed to enjoy freezing on SSBM.  I've been through several NES's also, but who hasn't...

I just got my 360 two days ago and I'm having the artifact problem now. I tried the NFS demo and I had blue and red pixels all over the place. Looked like I should have had my red and blue 3d glasses on. It might have been in 3D.

I have my 360 resting horizontal and is well ventilated.

I wondered if anyone has heard an explanations from MS.

i just got a ghosted screen image over my halo 2 game.  certian maps were getting this.  Is this a Xbox 360 emulation issue?  Or have others seen stuff like this in Halo 2 on original xbox?

Hey jungec,

I was playing Halo2 tonight and noticed the same thing. Must be just that. Some sort of emulation issue.

I think you are wrong with your estimation of 1% or whatever. I believe there is an epidemic. My first xbox 360 lasted 3 days before the sceen began to pixelate, It took a further 10 days to get a replacement, and the replacement lasted 30 minutes before freezing and crashing. The courier that picked up and returned my xbox 360 said that he had been doing nothing but picking up and returning xbox 360's and another guy on my forum 'Xbox 360 Faults' claims that his DHL courier quoted 30 xbox 360's locally had been returned. MS customer support offer no compensation for my inconvenience. Now I understand that in an manufacturing process you get faults getting through, but how the hell can MS justify sending me out an untested faulty replacement system? That is a hard pill to swallow, and if MS send me a 3rd faulty xbox then look out..........
