Xbox 360 GPU Artifacts-- Posted by XanTium on November 25 23:10 EST
We received the following screenshots from gprime, an Xbox 360 owner.
Unlike the earlier reports his Xbox 360 is not crashing, but displays some very strange graphics. To fix he has to turn off the console and let it cool down for a bit ... so it looks like another heat problem (hot GPU/RAM?)
Here are some screenshots of COD2 messing up the graphics display during gameplay.

More Screenshots: pic03, pic04, pic05.

i would like to see pics of where he has his system placed. it might be in a spot where it dont get enough  air space to cool down. and since the system dont give him the 3 light error it most def a gpu problem since he is still able to play

Other than being on carpet, I don't see any reasons for it to overheat:

I'm in Canada and it's winter, and I'm too cheap to turn my heater on... so it's not like it's too hot in here either smile.gif

As I look at your pics, it looks like a video issue, not a GPU issue.  To clarify; the GPU appears to be rendering the polygons (and their textures) correctly, but it appears that there is an issue in the output stage of the video.  I would be curious to see if the output from the composite cable is similar to the output you are getting.  (I am assuming that you are using a component video cable with your rig.)  The effect you are seeing is called 'solarizing' and is often present when the luminance is overdriven.  This *could* be caused by overheating.

As far as the overheating goes, I would recommend that you get the power brick on a flat hard surface.  The preliminary reports indicate that the power supply can really overheat on carpet (even short carpet like yours).   Just a suggestion - even if your PS is getting hot, it wouldn't be a likely cause of your video issues.

I know, you've got one vent covered all ready, and to add the P/S is on the carpet, I put my 360 on a shelf, with 3 inches of clearance from each vent, as reccomended. As well, my P/S sits on the top of the shelf, behind the tv, there's heat that can be found around my 360, but when i touch the actual unit, it's cool, so I think that's your problem...

Don't know if it helps anything, but I got the same artifacts today playing Kameo.  I was playing for about 6 hours straight when it started happening.

My Xbox sits on an open shelf with nothing near it.  The power supply is on the top of a cardboard box.

Shut it down to eat dinner.  Came back and no artifacts when I started again.

Sounds like the same thing going on with mine. Hope you're fortunate enough for it to only happen once.

Yup, the carpet's pretty likely EXACTLY the problem - check out the "bottom" of the console there (really the side but since it's on end... eh...) - There's a major intake vent there, by having it on carpet you've entirely blocked it. I actualy ended up deciding on keeping mine horizontal, because although it doesn't look quite as neat, I wanted good airflow around and through the system. I also remember the issues the PS2 had with units that had been stood on end, as well as certain small-formfactor PCs that have trouble with their burners, all because it's mounted sideways. Yes it works fine that way, but depending on the direction the laser's moving in (i.e. when the system is on end does it track horizontally or is it at an angle?) it could put extra wear on the assembly/gears that track it back and forth, but mainly I was worried about the heat thing. Also keeping the house fairly cool but I'd yank both the PSU and the 'box itself off the floor fast. Carpet is never good for consoles, even laying sideways wouldn't be all that great because the carpet will still hold in a lot of heat on the bottom side, whichever side happens to be down at that moment. I'm prety sure that's one of the main reasons for the "inhale" shape (as they call it) of the 360. Concave allows for much more airflow under the system. I'll definitely keep an eye out to see how this progresses though.
/Glad I bought a replacement plan on my Xbox 360
//Sad it was a core
///But bought wireless controller/hard drive/HD cables etc elsewhere... Now just worried about overheating before they get more units in...

...both his 360 and the PSU are on the carpet!. This thread is pointless without a re-test with everything set up correctly.
