360 Fan Noise
« on: November 24, 2005, 01:10:00 PM »

Okay, I love the 360 so no bashing here, but I am wondering if my 360 is possibly defective. The fan noise is remarkably loud, more so than any other PC I've ever used. I know the G5 chips produce a boat load of heat, so I can understand the need to cool it. I just am hard pressed to believe it's supposed to be this loud. Anyone else experiencing this?

you sure its the fan, and not the dvd drive? cause the dvd drive makes about as much noise when spinning up as my 16x dvd reader

Well the DVD spinning ads to the problem. It's unbearably loud, so much so I am going to return it. It's literally as loud as a hair dryer and unacceptable for a $400 unit. Being a Mac user, I can say with certainty the G5 chips require HUGE amounts of cooling so the noise is no surprise. MS has dropped the ball if it thinks anyone would include something this loud in any a entertainment set up. I am sadly disappointed and hoping they can find a way to quiet future versions.

Probably is defective, but I'm f'd considering there's no way to exchange it until there's a proliferation of more units. This is no random XBOX bash, but anyone who is patient enough to wait I'd highly suggest doing so. The console has more problems than the Bush administration. No doubt they will get fixed, but it's appalling to think  I waited 19hrs in the cold for a defective unit.

i guess its the one in a few that are having problems

me and my 5 friends all have a 360, and its not defective/loud/etc....

fan noise is little to none, and yes, the dvd drive can be a little irritating, but its only loud when your using it, so all you have to do is turn up your movie/cd/game and voila, it goes away  sleep.gif

I have the same problem with my 360. The DVD is louder than my 25yo refrigerator. It only happens with the 360 games and not with DVD’s or xbox games. I sent my unit to MS for repair because the noise is unacceptable. Hopefully, I either have a bad drive or they have a newer model drive that they can put in. Turning up the sound to mask the noise is not a reasonable solution to the problem cussing.gif . If the problem can’t be solved, I may have to wait until I can put an alternative drive in myself.

I will update this when I get the system back. So far the service has been spectacular. I had no wait time for customer service and the shipping box came to my door the next day. MS said that I will get my unit back in a week.

That does not sound right my power brick is louder than by drive ever has been. I can hear the laser assembly moving around so the spin up sound is minimal.

send it in for a overhaul. sad.gif

Check to see if there isn't something obstructing or rubbing the fans when they are in operation - think of a card in your bicycle tires.

the Dvd drive is loud on all the box's, same for the UK too.  but silent when playing dvds and Xbox 1 games.

so its not a fault.. just xbox360 wanting to read its games at the highest Reader speed for some stupid reason, im thinking it must be a 16x dvd reader because at top speed they are all bleeding loud (even the supposedly siletn ones (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)).

What is strange is that DVD make much noise only with DVD Games! i own Kameo and NFSMW , both make DVD running high speed so making much noise.

Now strangely i tried the New DVD demo from XBOX360 Magazine, and DVD read without making much noise???  so there is a first idear: perhaps Games Are protected, then DVD need to run Fast and Decrypt DATA quickly and  Perhaps DVD Demo isn't encrypted.....

Same for DVD video, No noise...

Yes my xbox 360 was about 3x louder then my custom PC with 6 fans. I also sent it in to get it fixed the guy who I talked to said it sounds like an over working fan problem which is common since this thing gets hot. I hope they send it back with the problem fixed and how my 360 ate my call of duty 2  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/grr.gif)
