Yes my xbox 360 was about 3x louder then my custom PC with 6 fans. I also sent it in to get it fixed the guy who I talked to said it sounds like an over working fan problem which is common since this thing gets hot. I hope they send it back with the problem fixed and how my 360 ate my call of duty 2  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/grr.gif)

no its the dvd drive.. its louder than ANY fan i have ever used in a custom pc.. i garauntee it will come back and be just as loud as when you sent it off.

its a shit DVD drive, ms picked a manufaturer that could mass produce them at a cheap price.

Yep its the DVD drive.....mines as quiet as a mouse until it spins up a disc.

Please modding dudes come up with a solution so we can swap out our cheap noisy drives with something a little bit more slicker/quieter...

Better still.....please ms can we have a 120gig hd so we can backup our games to hd and play without mini tornados in our sound-proofed games rooms... smile.gif   mmm not likely me thinks  mad.gif

Hey apart from this though the 360 kicks arse..

Loud fans yes. Just get rid of these 2 loud 60mm fans and replace it with I big ass 120mm fan!

Anyway, I'm getting a new x360 when my retailer gets them in, mine freezes too much.

The Fans on the XBOX 360 are MUCH louder than on previous consoles which is due to the power produced!

The CPU's are basically Power PC G5's - If you know anyone who has an Apple G5, ask them how load their fans are, and I expect youll hear answers like 'Vacuum cleaner' & 'Harrier Jump Jet'!  The Power PC processors generate a huge amount of heat compared to intel chips, and as such need big heatsinks - the mac G5 heatsinks are about 3" x 5" x 5" & with a 3" fan blowing on them!, the fans in the 360 are quiet by comparison.

ive also noticed while playing NFS:MW my drive is exceedingly noisy. sounds just like a 12v fan at high speed.

as others have said... quit the game and go to the dash, its silent.

I noticed true the DVD drive makes alot of noise when spining but it seems when the box gets hot those fans kick up like jet turbines thus greating a whole hell of alot more noise. So its going to require more than one sollution to fix all the noise problems.

Ok , i have an Answer from a Specialist..... DVDROM is controled by program, and seem that firsts Games, like Kameo/NFS/PGR3 and others used First 360 DevKit on which there wasn't Control on DVDROM read speed!!!

New games, like DOA4 or DVD mag, use Last 360 devkit, and Speed is Controled, so no more Noise.

What's not cool, is that playing a game with DVDROM at full speed during some hours will reduce considerably the DVDROM life....

I have experienced recently some lock on game like NFSMW, and it seemed the DVDROM was too hot!!! arghhh

This seems like the most sesible post I have read in this thread....

I thought the DVD-ROM speed was cranked up to reduce load times & to compensat for the developers not being able to rely on 360's having HDD's to cach info off of the disc...

wow yah the dvd drive ie loud but taking it back because of that that might be the dumbest thing ive ever hered in my life. It is no where near as loud as a hairdryer. If you would just turn ur tv up or get surround soudn there wont be any problems. It doesnt bother me at all and I don't even turn my tv up more then normal.

lol, propably there's nothing wrong with his console, it makes noise (not that much compared to a 1.0 Xbox) so accept it and live with it, you ain't getting a uiter system ATM.... G5 make noise, and remember this is an upgraded G5 (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

My 360 has always been quiet, but the other day my power supply got loud and now its loud everytime I turn the system on.  The two little fans in the power supply are louder than everything else.  My dvd drive is bad at all and I dont think I've ever heard the fans in the 360 (there is lots of open space around my 360).  Anyone else have a problem with the power supply or know why all of a sudden it would be louder than hell.

I had two premiums and one was a lot louder than the other. Oddly enough the quiet one is always cool, and the loud one was always rather hot/warm. The DVD drive was also really loud come to think of it, glad I got rid of it. Now I have the nice cool quiet one.

Hi. New member here.

Just to let you know that its total pot luck and the odds will get better as time goes on as to the noise your 360 makes. Some units are fitted with much quieter but more expensive fans and DVD drives which will be introduced more as the 360 sells more and makes a profit. Same with the last XBox. The reason a few "good 'uns" are dotted around is so media reports, reviews and forums like this aren't full of "The 360 is too noisy....agreed....agreed....agreed" which gives it a bad image. But its too expensive to have quiet fans and drives in every machine. Happened with the last XBox and the PS2 too. My XBox is fairly noisy but my cousin's (who got his a year later) is whisper quiet.

Best way to reduce noise is to have it lying flat. The 360s fans will speed up and down according to temperature and the heat builds up more when its upright. Also your drive will make slightly less noise when running in a flat 360. Unfortunately the drive is a noisy bugger running at full speed (16x). Look it at this way. It has to transfer data to fill up that 512Mb RAM and put some data aside on the hard drive for later so it needs to be fast so you don't have 2 minute loading times.

Whats the 360's noise like when running XBox titles? I'm sure its much quieter.

Rather than start a new thread, I thought I'd add my fan query to this one. I haven't got any actual 360 games yet - my local stores don't rent them out - but I've turned on my 360 and I notice it's about as loud as my X-Box 1 is on the dashboard. Thing is, I've noticed that the fan speed seems to change fairly often or something - I'd say every minute or two the fan changes pitch slightly. It's not making a huge whining noise, it's just that my X-Box 1's fan noise is constant. My 360's, on the other hand, varies a little in pitch. Maybe I'm being paranoid, but does anyone notice this?
