Heatsink On Gpu To Darn Small?
« on: November 24, 2005, 07:51:00 AM »

Hi,

I'm just wondering why the heatsink on the GPU is so damn small on the 360, noway in h*ll that thing is going to cool down the GPU properly. Are you sure enough that thats not the issue with these defective Xbox 360's?

Just wondering what you guys over there wonder about this, as for me in Sweden I'm just waiting for the launch next week and hoping that my box doesn't have the "blinky-blink" issue.

The dvd drive sits on top of where the gpu heatsink is so the profile has to be low.

Actually the GPU heatsing is not THAT small if you compare to the sizes of standar CPU heatsinks (its almost the size of the heatsink of my X800 Pro, and my card does not have an 80mm fan cooling it).

Besides almost all cpu heat sinks have been low profile...

Doh! I meant to say GPU above. GPU heatsinks are usually llow profile (mainly due to space constrains though).

Hehe.. okey biggrin.gif I went a bit "Huh.." overthere.. But the idea of having the placement of the heatsink directly underbeneath the DVD-rom and close the CPU (As in the first Xbox) is at pretty bad idea. Why didn't the just ad a "Airtunnel" throughout the box and have both CPU and GPU aligned without anything above besides a through and through windtunnel giving coldair in directly and constantly. Sure the design of the box would have to be abit different but it would definately marked out heat being an issue for a failing box.

I woud think the console cools better horizontally due to the fact that it's using a heat pipe.

Becides the fins on the GPU, coupled with the fact that the DVD drive sits right on top of it means it can only really vent out the back.

I would say if you wanted better cooling, either A do something that makes the fans push more air and/or B replace the thermal compound on the GPU/CPU with something more effecent.

Thats correct, the thing about the heatpipe. Thats the thing what I talked about, Why did they put the GPU underneath the DVD-rom? It's a nextgen GPU and sure it will get more hotter than previous one.

Well, I hope the cold weather here in Sweden will be enough for the 360.. Now only 6 days left smile.gif

not exactly true at all
take a look at Nvidias line for example.....

the 6800Ultra runs hotter then the 7800GTX because the GTX uses a smaller manufacturing process, and thus uses less volts (power)
Thats why on GTX's youll see they only have a single slot cooler, where as the Ultras have dual slot coolers but still run hotter.

Same goes for CPU's

The more "next gen" they are, the cooler they run (due to less voltage required to run them), which might be why M$ can get away with using a smaller heatsink (but im sure on future versions, theyll beef it up a little)

the manufacturing process is getting bumped down to a smaller one in the 360s future, reduces cost power usage and heat output

I must say that I thought MS was going to overtake SONY .. but it looks like MS has taken the turn for worst.. look at all the errors and over heating.. just shows you that the hardware is RUSHED UNPOLISHED product

every console has its flaws

if by your logic, wouldnt Sony have been done for after the failings and errors of the PS2???

you cant make judgements on a console that isnt even out yet.........whos to say the PS3 wont melt or blow up (just saying, you never know)
