Defective Xbox 360 ?
« Reply #91 on: November 23, 2005, 10:09:00 AM »

After going back to the store when I purchased my defective Xbox I was told that retails are contractually unable to take defective systems as returns.

SHOULDN'T THERE BE AT LEAST A DISCLAIMER EXPLAINING ANY BURDER FOR DEFECTS IS GIVEN TO THE CONSUMER

After speaking again with MS they create a repair order and are now sending me a box the ship my system to them in.  Actually I am happy that I am sending it in an not just waiting for a power replacement becuase this is definently a hardware problem that goes alot deeper that a power brick.  I have no problem getting power to the system, and since I only had mine on for about 5 minutes before it fried, I find it extremely hard to believe that any critical temperatures were reached in such a short time period.  I definently encourage anyone with problems to ship it back to MS for repairs.  This will ensure that your system has been much more thoroughly tested and brought up to date.  I cannot imagine that MS would send up a 'fixed' system that would still have fatal issues.  Of course, MS is doing alot of stuff that I couldn't imagine before so only time will tell.

Hey I have had the same problem I got my xbox 360 yesterday and it took me all day to get through xbox live and sign up before it crashed over and over agian. it seems like a software problem not hardware. I have played pdz and pgr3 for hours flawlessly but when I mess around with the dashboard or press the xbox live button [x in middle of controler] or when that silver screen comes up and try to go out of it. It will just freeze up. can you tell me how you have your xbox positioned if the power block is close or what not . could you give me some details and everyone else please.

I won mine from every10minutes.com, got it saturday turned it on to set it up shut it down, went to walmart to get a game popped in tiger woods 06 played 1 hole and crash, turned it back on, 3 red lights. called tech support and they told me they couldnt help me because the system wasnt even out yet. called back a few more times same thing. Called sunday and the guy set me all up, i got the box to ship it back to them on tuesday and it came with this...
Packing Instructions
so then the guy goes well you got lucky and got the system before it came out but now it doesnt work to which i replied well how long is this all going to take and he says well shouldnt be to long seeing as where i interrupted and said shit its gotta be one of the 1st ones back. he laughed and agreed. guess i wasnt the only one.

Mine is working fine so far.  But when I plugged it in at about 10pm last night and I logged in to XBL, it immediately downloaded patches.

Did you guys hook into XBL and get the patches?

Like I said, I played for like 3 hours last night and had no problems.  It played moves, Halo 2, NFS MW and Madden 06 for the 360.

this may be just a overheat problem dont put you 360 into a cramped shelf and try to keep the room its in 10 degrees lower then any of your other rooms having a fan blowing on it or an air conditioner nearby would be good after taking one look at the inside of this beast it needs all the cooling it can get, i havent gotten my 360 yet(thank god my dad switched jobs and im poor for the moment) but hopefully they make a fix for this. Luckly i usually keep my consoles on my desktop which is usualy wide open with good venalation and i live in a well snowed part of newyork where my room is usualy always 10 degrees lower than average temp or equal to outside temp(i like being cold)

I am waiting for my box to come and I was wondering if you shipped you hard drive with it.  They said not to have any accessories attached to it, but does that include the HDD? Thanks in advance.

if it did a "360" it would do a full circle and continue the direction it is in now what you meant to say was 180 which would turn your joke into a non comical statement

anyhoo, my premium has been working fine so far with madden, NFS, and COD2.  I've only had time to play a total of 8 hours or so since launch.

After a keeping it powered on for a few hours, the exhaust was pretty darn warm.  Nothing too alarming, but quite a bit hotter than my first gen running a 80mm @ 12V.  I'd go ahead and turbo charge it but I'm waiting to see if mine frags  unsure.gif

i have a core system and bought the 20gig hdd. the console will just lock up every now and then. it's almost impossible for me to play perfect dark zero, but the disc looked scratched when i took it out of the case so i'm going to exchange it today. madden 06 and call of duty 2 are in perfect condition and they lock up every now and then too. it seems the longer the xbox is on the more they tend to freeze

Whoever's idea it was to put the xbox 360 on the top of 2 soft peices of foam and call that a secure protection for shipping should be shot, or at least fired.  Like anyone in UPS or FedEx gives a rats ass about proper handeling of mail.  Jesus christ, every system in the history of systems had better shipping protection.

I get three red lights on the "ring of light" described by MS as "a general hardware error".  Just stupid.  Here's my experience, and some advice on how to "correct" your problem.

So I reserved my platinum box up at Wherehouse Music.  I was first on the list.  Hell yeah, I was gonna get my xbox 360 at midnight, go home and jam it till I passed out with the wireless in my hand.
I started up the console on my VGA monitor and proceeded through the initial setup.  Finishing up, I was ready to play PDZ and jam my ass off.  I pressed A on the "open disk tray" and the damn thing opened a cm and shut back.  "What the hell.." I was pissed at this point, but after a few openings and closings I realized my dumb ass still had the sticker accross the eject and tray parts.  I removed the sticker, opened the tray, and went to put in PDZ.
Knowing the effects of keeping the PS2 upright, and the laser issues that would follow, I decided to tip it over onto it's side before placing the game in.  I turned it over, placed the disk in the tray, and looked up to the screen to play.  A black screen stared back at me.
I noticed I had unplugged the vga cable from the back of the box.  I plugged it back in to get a grey screen of vertical lines.  I figgued, hell, the damn thing can't handle the cable being unplugged, so I restarted the console.  All that I got to greet me was 3 red leds blinking on the "ring of light".
I'm completly knowledged about the first M$ box, and knew that this wasn't a good sign at all.  "You've got to be kidding me." I said.
Hours of sitting on the phone to MS passed by as I constantly unplugged and pluged everything in, trying different combinations of things, and still unsuccessful.  My hommie said to me, "Give it a good slap."  Reluctant to hit my 400 dollar peice of "top of the line" gaming equiptment, I attempted other methods to get the thing back to working condition.
After speaking with a M$ representitive (aka dumb ass) and filling out a service request, I hung up the phone furious.  I set the xbox 360 upright, and slapped it with both hands simultaniously on either side.  Powered it up, and played PDZ for a few minutes without a hitch.  The enevitable glitch returned and I attempted the slam again, and got it back to working.
So for those of you with a 3 red led error, waiting for the return shipment box to appear, I have to offer you a temporary solution.  I call it the "DK smash" as it's similar to Donkey Kongs forward smash move on SSBM.  Slap the xbox with both hands on either side of the box before powering up to (I guess) realign the gpu, or whatever the hell is broken/not working inside the stupidly created case.
Who the hell makes a concave case for computer hardware?  A mobo isn't concave..  What the hell do you expect?
I blame this issue on three things.

1.  Rediculus packaging.

What the hell were they thinking, that nothing was going to get dropped, or slammed, or stacked, or any of the normal mailing proccesses that occur everyday?

2.  Manufacturing mistakes.

Whatever machine they used to press the gpus, or whatever the hell is coming loose needs to be recalibrated, because this is just the stupidest thing I have ever seen in my life.

3. Over heating

The beast works for a while after the slap because the gpu or whatever gets stuck back where it's supposed to be untill it heats up and get's missalligned again.  I remembered back when the first 360 vid came up on ourcolony.net, J. Allard said something about water cooling.  What the hell happened to that?

So yeah, untill your box comes in the mail, try the DK smash, or the DK bongo approach by beating the thing like a pair of bongos.  That seems to get it going too.  You may be reluctant to beat your machine, but hell, once I got that repair order in, I'm kicking the shit out of it to play the games.

Oh yeah, the god damn thing scratched my PDZ too.  When are they gonna fix stupid shit like that?

im not surprised there are some systems with issues, it should be expected by everyone.  it happens every new system launch and cant really be avoided.  however i think all these special treatments like keep in cold room, under a fan, or next to an air conditioner (just some things i have read on the net that people are doing) is stupid.  as long as you have a working console all that should be needed is a good and clean ventalated area to place your console and power supply.   i was cautious about getting a faulty system but after 7 hours of straight heavenly gaming im not worried.  the system got no warmer then any previous system i have had before.  if you have a defective system i am sorry but its something to always consider at the launch of a system, call MS register your 360 (like i did) and in a matter of weeks youll have a working system again.  im sorry if you have to miss out on some weeks of gaming but its free.
