« on: November 21, 2005, 10:14:00 PM »

just set up my 360, checked everything out on the hard drive, yata yata, deleted everything accept the hexic arcade game and it shows only 13 gigs of free space WTF

unless the HD included in the premium pack is slightly different then the stand alone retail, shouldnt it show at least 16 gigs or something, there is nothing on there, no videos, no game demos, no music, no nothing    i deleted it all, just the stupid arcade game is left

The rest of the hdd space might be taken up by a cache partition, just like on the original xbox hdd.

13gig matches the free space on the Kiosk Machines...

The other partitions are probably for caching...

Remember the current gen Xbox had 5 partitions, 3 of which were used for caching.

But why caching? The core version will be able to play all games, right? Does this mean that the performance of the core version will be a lot worse than the premium one?

thats weird cause all the vids and demos on the kiosks are way more than what was included on this drive, but for the kiosk to show that with everything on the drive and i have deleted everything, even themes and those little gamercard images and it still shows 13, owell

Hi,

I don't know anything specifically about the Xbox360, per se, but I do know a lot about computers, and computer systems. To address the "missing" space on the hard drive one must consider the complexity of the system and the amount of software required to operate it in any mode.

My guess is what you have here is the OS. Why? Well, the 3 cpu core is a very complex system. A ROM chip with BOIS would be pretty big to manage the basic workings of in and out of the hybrid device. My guess is that the BOIS ROM is in the hudereds of MBit if not close to 1G. Having said that, to operate the system, and OS would need to be several Gig of information. Compare it to xp or any other OS, and you see what I mean.

It looks like the Xbox OS is around 7G, with 5-6 accounting for the OS and probably 2G for swap (writing the entire contents of ram onto the drive 4 times) also called caching.

Has anyone had theirs apart? What kind of HD is in the box?

Well, the Xbox works without a HD as well, so I guess no.

Since, as I said, I don't know anything about the xbox, what can you do without a hard drive? Play games only?? What are it's intrinsic fuctions without a hard drive?
