Over the past three months, I've known 11 people that have bought XBOXs. They ALL got SAMSUNG drives in their XBOXs. I took one back that I had since July, and got a new one and yep...gotta SAMMY in it. THOMSONS aren't being used anymore to my knowledge and the Philips drives are VERY rare. SAMSUNGS are nearly all that MS is usuing now, so just get one and I'm sure you'll get one.

QUOTE (zysset @ Nov 17 2004, 01:50 PM)
i have read in another thread that the new philips is the best. Is that really true?

If on the xbox is a manufacturig date of 2004, is there a new drive inside? Or could it be that there is old drive inside?

Your guess would be just as good as anyone elses.  Earlier in the year would probably be a earlier divr, later in the year would probably be a later dive.  A manufacturing date of 2004 is a very vague time frame.  321 days have passed in this year so far.

I had a HALO LE XBOX that was MFGd in February that came with a SAMSUNG SDG-605B. I bought another XBOX in July that was MFGd in June and it had the SAMSUNG- 605F which is the NEWER drive. Most XBOXs now at EB are all MFG in Sept-early Oct, so rest assured if you get one made around those months you WILL get a new drive.

During the course of Xbox's life, the brands have remained the same, but the actual DVD drives have changed slightly...
He refers to each new drive as a "generation". So:
3rd gen = 3rd drive from that manufacturer.
Simple enough?
