Xbox360 Harddrive

20 GB is plenty for what you can do with it for the next months. upgrading won't be possible until someone figures out the encryption.. and sata 2.5" drives are pretty expensive right now anyways.

If the thing is ever hacked you could prolly use an external USB2 HDD for loading games since this time the OS is multitasking and allowes for the USB drivers to run while a game is running (unlike with xbox1 where only one executable could run at once and everything was erased from memory when it started thus no network booting).

i know that the enclosure for the hard drive has been disassembled, but has anyone tried attaching a regular sized hard drive to it to see if the xbox 360 would "format" to the specific xbox 360 file system?  isnt the hard drive the same thing as a memory card?  the original xbox gave you the option to "format" the memory card so that the xbox could recognize it.  and as we can see, the hard drive for the xbox 360 LOOKS like a regular smaller hard drive.

even if the connections are smaller, arent there converters from small hard drive to regular size?

my theory is if/when we figure out the file system (if that is even necessary) we could fathom a bigger enclosure to attach to the house.

any thoughts ...

You can find a 2.5" sata drive for around 75$ on newegg plus I think you get 40 gigs instead of 20

I'll bet that once the Hard Drive encryption is cracked, there will be a way to hook up any SATA Drive to the 360, 2.5" or not.

What would also be pretty nice is if they could somehow get the Memory Card interface to read Thumb Drives. I would rather buy a nice 1gb+ Thumb Drive than spend $40 on a 64mb memory card.

Well, you figure it's gotta be some kind of software switch. I'm sure MS didn't have specially made hard drives for the 360. The software encryption is either on the hard drive itself, or works in tandem with something in the BIOS chip on the 360. Once that's discovered, I'm sure it will be quite easy to copy to any SATA drive.

Lets start by telling you all that upgradeing the Xbox 360 hard drive will probally take several months to get working correctly. First lets start off with explaning the problems:

1.)The xbox 360 hard drive has 4 partitions (partitions to you noobs means sections) on it that are put on it when the hard drive is made:
-A.)Emulatior software (You need this to play old xbox games)
-B.)System Files (This is used by the xbox to verify that it is a valid xbox 360 hard drive)
-C.)User Files (This is where music, game saves and other "user put" data is stored)
--*Note: when you format the hard drive useing the xbox format hard drive option it only formats the
                 user files partition(Sector)

2.)M$ (MS) created there own file system (file system means that a normal windows/mac cannot read the files).
-A.)In order to make the files readable us hackers months to understand file structure (this can be
done by reading the files in hex using a hex editor).

3.)The xbox 360 hard drive cannot be copied to another hard drive just by copying hex code or binary code (A hard drive can be broken down into code from 0 and 1 which is binary, or 0 to 9 and A to F which is Hex).
-A.)Copying the hard drive in Nortion Ghost or Lunix will not work. Nortion Ghost can nither read the
hard drive (because of the file system) or copy the hard drive. Lunix cannot just dump (create)
an image (compressed) file and burn that on to another hard drive becuse M$ (MS) has
                 created.
an unknown way to create a error when you try this process.
-B.)The hard drive also has a "verification key" which uses the serial number of the hard drive, the
size of the hard drive(must be 20 gigabytes) and the universal hard drive password (this is a
universal password that has been given by Samsung to MS.) These will NOT be very hard
                 to get and crack.

4.)Other methods of "hacking" to get a bigger hard drive will be:
           -A.)USB method
--1.)This method will be done by getting a file onto a USB drive (Ipod or any other USB storage
device) Once on the hard drive this will used to trick the OS (Operating System) to crash and
install a alternitive dashboard. The way that we might achive this is to make a ""Virus"" if you
                      will.
           -B.)Memmory Card Method
--1.)This method will be done by waiting untill we can wire up a way to connect the memory card to
a computer, or wait for Datel (Action Replay) and plant the same ""Virus"" that I described in
the above method onto the xbox hard.
          -C.)Game Save Method
--1.)This method will be done by using the same Idea as the Memmory Card Method, but will not
plant a virus on the hard drive but by rather by deguising it self as a game save and when
you go to load this file it will crash the OS (Operating System) and install another dashboard.
          -D.)Hardware Method (Modchip)
--1.)This method will basically be a add on to the motherboard, and add a custom made chip that
will change the way the Xbox 360 Operates and will allow Upgrades to the hard drive

--**Note: All of the Methods above besides the Hardware Method will allow FTP access to the hard drive,
and then you must create a duplicite of the origional hard drive.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-Please know that I am sure that MS buffed up its Xbox Live Security, so once these mods are finished, that you might not be able to go on Xbox Live.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-Also, I am in no way held reliable for any think that you may do to your Xbox 360, or origional Xbox if you deside that you are going to "hack" your xbox and have no knowlage of hacking.
