Ipods And Xbox 360
« on: November 12, 2005, 09:28:00 AM »

On some website, I heard that the xbox 360 will not be able to play any songs on your ipod or any mp3 player that has songs purchased through the itunes music store. This is where i used to get all my songs but then i felt like getting them through limewire. The top selling mp3 [player is the ipod, and most songs are bought from itunes>  they said it was somthing to do with apple not wanting to allow this?? Any one else hear of this?

I'm afraid that it's true.

Apple don't want anyone to easily be able to get encoded music off the iPod so it's encrypted.
The problem is that Apple don't want to licence their system to anyone else so unless MS want to break the DMCA they can't get into the content. I wouldn't be surprised if there's some support for streaming protected content from 'Plays for sure' devices but that's because MS owns the system.

Overall it's partly Apple being a pain and partly the side-effect of having DRM. Unless Sony pay for a licence from MS there's no chance of the PS3 streaming for PfS devices either, but at least with MS there's an option to do it, if you've got the money.

As usual with DRM, if you use it then you have to except your rights to be restricted in some way.
