Streaming Video From Xbox To Xbox 360
« on: November 07, 2005, 11:58:00 AM »

Would it be possible to stream video and audio from an xbox to a xbox360 .Im thinking of upgrading to a 360 and would like to treat my xbox as a video and music sever. My existing box has a 250gig drive in it and with the new 360 only having a 20 gig drive well I guess you get my point.

Thanks Bezel :D

No you cannot do that...

The 360 can only stream from 1 of 3 places

1. A USB devices plugged directly into the console
2. A Windows Media Center Edition PC
3. A Windows XP PC running Windows Media Connect.

Seeing as an xbox is none of those things you're out of luck.

Hahaha, wouldn't that be the ultimate hack!

Since the Xbox1 controller ports are just USB with modified connectors... what if someone wrote code into XMBC that allowed a controller port -> USB cable plug into the Xbox 360 allowing the Xbox1 to be the biggest USB mass storage device ever.  One end of the cable would be Xbox1 connector... and the other end would be the male USB plug.  Then you could technically stream it given proper code in XBMC?  The only caveat being that the controllers are only 1-way?

EDIT: The controller has to be 2-way... the memory card is in the controller.

No the controllers aren't one way (head sets, memory cards) BUT they are host USB ports looking for clients and the 360's are the same... you can't do that... you would have to build a box that would act like a client on both sides (this is VERY rediculous) and it would make more sense for someone to code an app to look like MS media connect.

Maybe linux with whine?

You beat me to my edit!  :P

Anyway, my next question would have to be... is being a "host USB port" hardware or software based?  And can it be written to ignore that command in XBMC?

I suppose this is all just stupid speculation because it would be far easier, and faster, to just make XBMC look like a mass storage device over the network.  At least I'm assuming you could piggyback some kind of signal that replicates MCE for streaming/transfers.

Some people have massive HD's in their xbox and it would be nice to use it as a server to the network and also could stay hooked up to whatever for using as a media center also... pretty much why people put linux on it to start with.

If M$ wants this thing to be the living room media center then they better add NAS support. I am not going to leave a multiple hundred watt system on all the time so I can access content whenever I want to when it is much cheaper to store my media on sweet little NAS devices running a few measly watts.
