Hd-dvd Firmware Update
« on: November 04, 2005, 08:01:00 AM »

PC Magazine believes that soon after the 360 is released, a firmware update will be available that allows HD-DVD useage. Is this even possible?

Flashing your Bios is a firmware update... Not to mention if they put the dash on a chip (remember the HDD can't hold it anymore) that would be considered a firmware update as well.

I don't see why they wouldn't do this. It would be a lot easier to have one version of the dashboard with "drivers" to support all the different versions of the console as opposed to different version floating around that they would have to maintain separately.

What good is the firmware update going to do if there is no HD-DVD drive?  The optical disc doesn't look modular, so upgrading seems out of the question (Remember the SegaCD!!!).  And unless they are pulling some major wool over our collective eyes, there isn't an HD-DVD drive in that thing at launch.  I can see WMVHD, but not full HD-DVD.

You cant change a 10 dollar samsung dvd-rom into a 80 dollar hitachi HD-DVD drive with a firwmare upgrade, magically change the laser diode from red to blue.

What they might have meant is that the xbox itself will be upgraded (drive swapped, firmwares changed, os patched) later to sport the new hd-dvd drive.

But the only use of the drive would be HD movies, and there are none on the market in HD-DVD format AND the x360 can already play WMVHD off regular DVD rom.

Yeah, I understood what the first post actually meant, but taken at face value, it sounds like he is just talking about a firmware upgrade with no hardware.

If that was possible, EVERYONE would have a "HD-DVD Drive" right now.  If it were as simple as software or firmware download, it would totally be a part of the mainstream by now.
