Xbox 360 games will never use HD-DVD - Maruyama -- Posted by XanTium on November 1 16:14
From gamesindustry.biz:

Quote

Japan's chief of Xbox operations, Yoshihiro Maruyama, has confirmed that while a version of the Xbox 360 console which can read HD-DVD discs is a possibility, the next-generation DVD standard will never be used for games on the platform.
His comments were made to Enterbrain's Famitsu Xbox magazine in an interview, where he expanded on a statement made by Microsoft chairman Bill Gates back in June regarding the potential for a HD-DVD enabled Xbox 360.

i was just getting ready to post this info, good thing i checked.

i always said that even if they do have a HD-DVD upgrade it would only be used for movies and not for games.  that would cause too many headaches for the developers and consumers.

well it would be good to have a hd format, but think about trying to implement it.

as it is a very large part of the hardware, it woul be hard to replace. and even harder would be how to tell which consoles are hd compatable or not.

it would be great if we could pit an aftermarket hd-dvd drive to it, but i think that would be very unlikely

The 360 will support VC1 (WMV HD) discs... They have a few out right now, hopefully when the 360 comes around they'll release a few more

The fact that they just released some standalone VC1 players (which cost more than a 360 Core mind you) helps as well.

I don't think fitting an HD-DVD drive would be very likly as the console would require the appropriate drivers.

When you enable progressive scan, and have a HDTV, DVD's run in 480p.

hey will the 360 let you watch movie files off a usb memory stick?

if so, how hard would it be to hook up a usb hd-dvd drive?

or would the box need to be modded for drivers?

AFAIK you cannot stream videos from a USB mass storage device (only Windows Media Center Editino PCs)

USB harddrives should theoretically just plug right in and work considering the 360 suposidly connects with all mass storage devices (though you probably wont be able to use it for anything but MP3s)
